La vida de Don Juan de Austria fue convulsa desde el principio. Su padre, el emperador Carlos I de España tuvo un romance con Bárbara Blomberg, una joven burguesa alemana, con quien concibió un hijo fuera del matrimonio. La vida daría un nuevo vuelco para él, cuando Carlos I de España fallece por paludismo el 21 de septiembre de 1558. Cuatro años antes Carlos I redactó un documento donde afirmaba que, tras enviudar, mantuvo una relación con una mujer soltera, con quien tuvo un hijo. En dicho documento, reconocía a Don Juan como miembro de la familia real bajo el nombre de Juan de Austria. Desde entonces el joven fue bienvenido también por el rey Felipe II de España, su hermano mayor. Con el tiempo, Juan de Austria fue admirado como militar y ávido diplomático, representando a la familia real durante el reinado de su hermano. Don Juan de Austria lo tenía todo: era un hombre valiente, culto, devoto, atractivo… Su hermano Felipe II le confió misiones decisivas y en todas ellas brilló con luz propia. Don Juan destacaba por su carisma a diferencia de su hermano, hombre huraño y triste, encerrado en El Escorial.

Most of the Austrians migrating to the U.S. in the World War II era stayed. For the roughly 30,000 Jews who had been brutally kicked out of their homes after the "Anschluss" and managed to snag immigration papers to the U.S., returning to desperately poor and still anti-Semitic Austria was not an option. These case studies show that integrating and assimilating into the American mainstream often was a difficult process that might take two generations. Many of the intellectuals and academics never fully felt at home in the U.S. as they viewed American culture shallow and American values too materialistic.
