Los acontecimientos de octubre de 1934, de los que ahora se cumplen noventa años, supusieron un parteaguas trascendental en la vida de la Segunda República, cuyo peso merita un libro como este; un esfuerzo colectivo que reúne a trece expertos para relatar, analizar y comprender de manera integral un fenómeno histórico complejo que transitó según los casos entre la huelga general insurreccional, la rebeldía institucional y la auténtica revolución social. Esta obra remonta el análisis al vuelco electoral de noviembre de 1933 que abrió las puertas del Gobierno al centro, apoyado por la derecha accidentalista, lo que conllevó un proceso de rectificación de las anteriores reformas republicanosocialistas, y a un antecedente destacado, como fue la fracasada huelga general campesina de junio de 1934. Pero se mira también al contexto internacional, para poner de manifiesto que la historia de España en este periodo estuvo plenamente inserta en las tendencias de conflicto comunes a toda Europa, como se ejemplifica con los casos de Francia, Alemania y, sobre todo, la Austria de Dollfuss. Los acontecimientos de la insurrección se estudian siguiendo un criterio territorial –en Madrid, Cataluña, el País Vasco y, sobre todo, pero no solo, Asturias– y se presta una atención específica al fenómeno de las distintas tipologías de violencia que se dieron en el escenario más sangriento: la revolución asturiana. Por último, las consecuencias de los hechos de octubre se analizan tanto en un plano corto, como es su impacto en la política de los gabinetes radical-cedistas y en la formación del Frente Popular, como en el largo plazo, con su incidencia en la historiografía y en la memoria histórica hasta el presente, puesto que todavía pregonaran algunas narrativas que se fijan en octubre de 1934 desde la óptica de la Guerra Civil.
