Hans Bentzien hat sich mit seinen historischen Skizzen absichtlich den Gebieten jenseits der Oder zugewendet, die seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs zu Polen gehören, die durch die Herrschaft der Nationalsozialisten und den angezettelten Zweiten Weltkrieg verspielt worden sind. Jenseits der Oder spielte sich aber bis zu dem Zeitpunkt deutsche Geschichte ab. Auch dort lebten bedeutende Geistesgrößen und entwickelte sich in diesen damaligen Landesteilen ein bedeutender Kern des deutschen Widerstands gegen Hitler. Bis zur Wende in Osteuropa und in der damaligen DDR war das Thema der deutschen Geschichte in der Neumark, in Ostpreußen und Schlesien gewissermaßen ein Tabu. In den Schulen wurde die Geschichte vor 1945 totgeschwiegen oder einfach gefälscht. In Polen wurde mit der Diskussion über die Deutschen vor 1945 meist „Revanchismus“postuliert. Den Heranwachsenden in der DDR wurde suggeriert, dass die von Polen nach dem Krieg besiedelten Gebiete immer polnisch gewesen seien, und nach 1945 der Rechtsanspruch Polens auf diese Regionen erfüllt worden sei. Kein Wort erfuhr man über die Vertreibung und Umsiedlung aus der Ukraine in die entvölkerten Gebiete östlich der Oder. Das Interesse an der Geschichte jenseits der Oder erwies sich als ungebrochen, als mit der Wende 1989 die Fakten der Geschichte offengelegt wurden. Auch die polnische Bevölkerung zeigte danach ein wachsendes Interesse an der deutschen Vorgeschichte, sie wollte nicht auf geschichtslosem Boden leben.
