Circa 1920 Randolph Bezzant Holmes captioned ‘Pathan woman NWFP India’ and signed by Holmes in bottom left corner. The young lady holds a period hand fan in her left hand and her right hand is raised to show the typical bracelets and rings in vogue at the time. Her head is outlined by her raised burka to expose her face with large nose stud and just above her hairline is a diamond patterned chain which arches across the top of her hairline. On her chest is a shawl below which hangs an oblong pendant from the base length of which hang small small chains with little metallic circular objects. Holmes was the official photographer for the third Anglo-Afghan war fought largely in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa previously known as ‘North West Frontier’. 19.5cm x30cm within mount.
