In diese Entwicklungszeit des deutschen Volkes stellt Kolbenheyer in "Das gottgelobte Herz" das Leben einer einzelnen Frau, die Entwicklung ihres Leibes und Gemütes vom Kind zur Reife in der jeweils weltbildenden Gemeinschaft eines in eine reichsstädtische Bürgerschaft eingebetteten Elternhauses und schließlich des Klosters. Der Autor zieht für sein Werk überlieferte Nachrichten einer historischen Persönlichkeit heran: der Margarete Ebner († 1351) aus Donauwörth, deren Briefwechsel mit dem Prediger Heinrich von Nördlingen er z. T. wörtlich dem Roman eingliedert. Dies kann geschehen, ohne dass dem Leser ein Bruch spürbar wird, weil sich Kolbenheyer mit der wörtlichen Rede der gestalteten Personen der historischen Sprachstufe des Oberdeutschen des 14. Jahrhunderts annähert. Über seine formalen Ansprüche an das Sprachkunstwerk und insbesondere über das hier erwähnte Gestaltungsmittel – eigentlich ein Gestaltungsanreiz für die Nacherschaffung der Gefühls- und Denkwelt der zur Darstellung kommenden Zeit i m L e s e r – hat sich der Autor verschiedentlich geäußert ("Sebastian Karst über sein Leben und seine Zeit"; "Die Dritte Bühne"). Der Leser, der sich nicht scheut, den Roman passagenweise laut zu lesen, wird unschwer die Wirkung einer historisch "wahren" Sprache erproben können. Das Werk ist der letzte Roman des Autors und erschien zuerst 1938.
