No character in recent fiction has excited greater interest than the beautiful, wilful, cruel, tender-hearted, proud, witty, and wholly delightful Princess Osra. Anthony Hope is at his best in the stories of which she is the heroine.'The Heart of Princess Osra is full of throbs and incidents, and though there are not less than nine of the lady's passages d'amour, and 'le pays du tendre' is criss-crossed in all directions, you still want a baker's dozen of these stories.

Second String, by Anthony Hope, brings to mind a new tendency in British fiction which has quite been creeping in during the last years of the 19th century; namely, the tendency to concern itself more and more with the social life of middle class people rather than the upper circles. Second String deals with the extremely mixed society of a small English town, in which the hero, Andy Hayes, upon returning home after some years in the Canadian lumber district, finds it somewhat embarrassing to steer successfully between the distinctly "high-life" people on his father's side of the house and Jack Rock, the village butcher, with whom he is connected through his mother's second marriage. There is nothing of great importance in the main thread of the story; it is a tranquil chronicle of how Vivian Welgood, a frail, timid sort of girl, while engaging herself to another man, discovers that there is something in the physical presence of strong, big Andy Hayes that gives her a certain borrowed courage and self-reliance. And of courseit is no surprise to the reader when the other man finally elopes with Vivian's hired companion that she promptly and indeed gladly turns to Andy as second string. The value of the book lies in the deft portrayal of present-day manners, and as such, slight and modest as it is, it rings true.

This is decidedly Mrs. Burnett's biggest novel, and one that has created widespread comment from the readers of the Century Magazine, where it has been appearing in serial form. The plot is based on an international marriage between a rich American girl and a degenerate English nobleman. The wife is very unhappy, and finally her husband makes her break with her own family, but when her sister is grown up she comes to the rescue and takes things into her own hands. She is a splendid type of the modern American girl and a heroine to whom all hearts are offered. The character drawings are particularly life-like, and the whole story is handled with masterful skill, while the style has a literary finish that is exceptional in fiction.

<p> As well as penning some of the most popular detective fiction, Conan Doyle also wrote thrilling adventure stories. „Rodney Stone” is a combination of both. Nelson, Beau Brummell, Fox and King George III himself appear in a tale at the heart of which is, as one character says, „a pretty conspiracy – a criminal, an actress and a prize-fighter, all playing their parts”. The book is narrated by Rodney, in 1851 thinking back over the events 1803, when Rodney was 17 and his best friend, Boy Jim, was 19. This is the year Rodney’s uncle comes to introduce the boy to London society. Sir Charles is a dandy, and a friend of Beau Brummell and the Prince of Wales. But Rodney’s father has hopes for his son going into the Royal Navy. Boy Jim also has a life decision to make. He has been raised by Champion Harrison as a blacksmith, but after befriending an alcoholic ex-actress, he yearns to see more of the world, at least London.</p>
