A Princess of Mars is a science fantasy novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Barsoom series. It was first serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Magazine from February–July, 1912. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the novel is considered a classic example of 20th-century pulp fiction. It is also a seminal instance of the planetary romance, a subgenre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the decades following its publication. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. This vision of Mars was based on the work of the astronomer Percival Lowell, whose ideas were widely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Barsoom series inspired a number of well-known 20th-century science fiction writers, including Jack Vance, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, and John Norman. The series was also inspirational for many scientists in the fields of space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life, including Carl Sagan, who read A Princess of Mars when he was a child. John Carter, a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War, goes prospecting in Arizona immediately after the war's end. Having struck a rich vein of gold, he runs afoul of the Apaches. While attempting to evade pursuit by hiding in a sacred cave, he is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength and superhuman agility in this new environment as a result of its lesser gravity and lower atmospheric pressure. He soon falls in with a nomadic tribe of Green Martians, or Tharks, as the planet's warlike, six-limbed, green-skinned inhabitants are known. Thanks to his strength and martial prowess, Carter rises to a high position in the tribe and earns the respect and eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas, one of the Thark chiefs.

This book investigates challenges to the U.S. military’s gender regime of hetero-male privilege. Examining a broad set of discursive maneuvers in a series of cases as focal points—integration of open homosexuality, the end of the combat ban on women, and the epidemic nature of military sexual assault within its units—Stephanie Szitanyi examines the contemporary link between gender and military service in the United States, and comprehensively analyzes forms of gendering produced by the military as an institution. Using feminist interpretivist methods to analyze an impressive combination of visual, textual, archival, and cultural materials, the book argues that despite policy changes since 2013 that may be positioned as explicit episodes of degendering, military officials have simultaneously moved to counteract them and reinforce the institution’s gender regime of hetero-male privilege. Importantly, these (re)gendering processes continue to prioritize certain forms of service and sacrifice, through which a specific version of masculinity—the masculine warrior—is continuously promoted, preserved, and cemented.

So fasziniert ihn ein Kunstsammler und führt ihn in die Welt der Kunst, aber auch in die merkwürdige Welt der erotischen Abhängigkeiten ein. Eines Abends berührt den künftigen Dichter ein Theaterbesuch, und plötzlich glaubt er zu wissen, dass der einzige Beruf, der je für ihn infrage kommen wird, der des Schriftstellers ist. Aber der Erzähler merkt bald, dass seinen Wesenszügen auch eine ausgeprägte Faulheit gehört. Die energische Leistung ist seine Sache nicht. Er ist verzettelt. Schon ein Jahr nach des Dichters Tod widmete die berühmteste Literaturzeitschrift Frankreichs, La Novelle Marcel Proust und Marcel Proust, eine Gesamtausgabe. Dann setzte der Kult ein, aber der hatte vielleicht schon zuvor begonnen, hatte begonnen, als das Foto von Marcel Proust auf seinem Totenbett überall in Paris als Postkarte zu erwerben war. Das war der erste Schritt zur Unsterblichkeit. Zur wirklichen überwindung der Zeit. Der Fotograf Man Ray war schließlich schon damals ein berühmter Künstler. Den großen Künstler aus vollem Herzen.
