Allerdings werden in einigen Staaten die Todesurteile kaum mehr vollstreckt, und in drei Staaten sprachen die Gouverneure ein Moratorium aus, d.h., die Vollstreckung wurde auf unbestimmte Zeit eingefroren. Noch spricht sich die Mehrheit der Amerikaner (60 %) für die Todesstrafe aus – aber die Zahl der Befürworter sinkt Jahr für Jahr.
