Dada la amplia gama genérica de la ficción sobre el crimen, la cual incluye las narrativas de detección, el thriller, el crimen de Estado, el crimen organizado, el true crime, etc., nos centraremos en estas páginas en la "narrativa de detección". Es por ello que no trabajaremos con toda la ficción vinculada con el crimen, sino con aquella caracterizada por plantear un proceso de investigación realizada por un detective (que puede ser amateur, privado o pertenecer a la policía). Esta decisión se sustenta en la importancia, centralidad e impacto que este género ha tenido a lo largo del siglo XX y lo que llevamos del XXI . Para tratar las características del género y su desarrollo, en el primer capítulo avanzaremos una definición formal, estructural y genérica de la narrativa de detección, en sus dos vertientes o subgéneros más importantes —la novela de enigma y la novela negra—, y plantearemos, de manera general, su relación con los géneros populares. Como consideramos que una revisión de cualquier género que no tome en cuenta la materialidad del texto, su historia, sus formas de producción, circulación y la relación con el público lector, quedará siempre trunca y no logrará explicar, por el simple método de la "influencia", su éxito ni la fijación de sus elementos formales, los capítulos 2, 3 y 4 estarán dedicados a un acercamiento histórico del género. Así, en el segundo capítulo nos centraremos en la emergencia de la narrativa del crimen hacia fines del siglo XVIII , su vínculo con la prensa y otros géneros discursivos que permitieron la fijación literaria de la fórmula narrativa del detective clásico con Poe y Gabirau. El tercer capítulo está dedicado al afianzamiento del subgénero enigma, que inicia con Arthur Conan Doyle y se asienta con lo que ahora se conoce como la "época dorada del género", a la que pertenecen autoras como Agatha Christie o Dorothy L. Sayers. Finalmente el cuarto y último capítulo está dedicado al subgénero negro, donde se analiza el surgimiento, en la tradición detectivesca norteamericana, del hard-boiled (cuyos mayores representantes son Dashiell Hammett y Raymond Chandler). En estos tres capítulos se incluyen tablas con una selección representativa de los relatos y novelas de los distintos subgéneros; se trata, como toda selección, de una propuesta inevitablemente incompleta de las producciones que se han hecho a lo largo de la historia.
