This large-scale anthology of early Scottish Literature, now revised, has been designed as a teaching text for use by school and university students. Longer works are either presented complete - e.g. James I, King is Quair; as long extracts with explanatory linking passages - e.g. Urquhart, The Jewel; or by sections which sum up the main themes and concerns of the text-e.g. Barbour's Bruce Book I. There are full critical and linguistic introductions; brief biographical and bibliographical introductions for each author or sub-section; the texts have all been re-edited; every difficult word is glossed, and full explanatory notes appear at the foot of each page. A substantial Appendix presents texts in Latin, Scots, English and Gaelic from the seventeenth century, demonstrating the vitality and interaction of these voices within the Scottish tradition. A noteworthy feature of the book is Professor Jack's Critical Introduction, 'Where Stands Scottish Literature Now?' This challenges many widely-held assumptions about Scottish literature. In particular it seeks to explore the reasons behind the strange neglect of the writers of the seventeenth century. Basing its argument on the texts of the Anthology as a whole, it seeks to re-define the accepted canon and suggests an alternative way of approaching Scottish literary history.

Esta colección de reflexiones sobre la cultura y literatura latinoamericanas está dividida en tres partes principales –cada una de ellas compuesta de tres ensayos– y un epílogo. En la primera parte, que he nombrado Arqueologías de la nación, realizo tres incursiones puntuales sobre el modo en que los archivos nacionales literarios han fundamentado su origen y dibujado su pretendida trascendencia. En la segunda parte de este libro, cuyo título es Poéticas y retóricas de autor, visito la obra de varios poetas del siglo XX, para ofrecer a los lectores y futuros investigadores algunas posibilidades interpretativas que estimo novedosas o, por lo menos, insuficientemente estudiadas. En la tercera, denominada Tropos y ficciones culturales, observo la manera en que dos ensayistas y críticos latinoamericanos estructuran sus sistemas de pensamiento, en torno de ciertas figuras retóricas que les permiten narrar la evolución de la cultura latinoamericana. Inspirado en este juego conceptual, construyo mi propia ficción o tropo cultural, para analizar el concepto de interculturalidad literaria, tal como se presenta en un poema que adopto como ejemplo. Finalmente, el Epílogo sobre el canon literario está dedicado al estudio de la figura del librero de inicios del siglo XX en la ciudad de Quito, como miembro pleno del sistema literario: educador, promotor y suscitador del canon.

Washington Square is a short novel by Henry James. Originally published in 1880 as a serial in Cornhill Magazine and Harper's New Monthly Magazine, it is a structurally simple tragicomedy that recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, unemotional father. The plot of the novel is based upon a true story told to James by his close friend, British actress Fanny Kemble. The book is often compared with Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships. James was not a great fan of Washington Square itself. He tried to read it over for inclusion in the New York Edition of his fiction (1907–1909) but found that he could not, so the novel was not included. Other readers, though, have sufficiently enjoyed the book to make it one of the more popular works of the Jamesian canon. The bitterest irony in the story is that Dr. Sloper, a brilliant and successful physician, is exactly right about Morris Townsend, and yet he is cruel to his defenseless and loving daughter. If the doctor had been incorrect in his appraisal of the worthless Townsend, he would be only a stock villain. As it is, the doctor's head functions perfectly but his heart has grown cold after the death of his beautiful and gifted wife. Catherine gradually grows throughout the story, ultimately gaining the ability to judge her situation accurately. As James puts it: "From her point of view the great facts of her career were that Morris Townsend had trifled with her affection, and that her father had broken its spring. Nothing could ever alter these facts; they were always there, like her name, her age, her plain face. Nothing could ever undo the wrong or cure the pain that Morris had inflicted on her, and nothing could ever make her feel towards her father as she felt in her younger years." Catherine will never be brilliant, but she learns to be clear-sighted.

War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells first serialised in 1897 in the UK by Pearson's Magazine and in the US by Cosmopolitan magazine.
