Immer wieder kreisten seine Gedanken um dieses Phänomen, und ihm fiel nichts anderes ein, als abzuwarten, als zu versuchen, sein eigenes Wissen über die Unbekannte zu vergrößern. Und dazu wurden in den letzten Tagen die Voraussetzungen immer besser. War Mac lange Zeit auf zufällige Begegnungen mit dem Wesen angewiesen, die meist für ihn recht unersprießlich verliefen, weil die Frau, sooft er auf sie traf, sich sehr rasch entfernte, ohne dass es jedoch einer Flucht gleichkam. Jeder Versuch einer Kontaktaufnahme blieb so ohne Erfolg.
