As a priest, Canon Demant preached frequently, belonging to a school that prepared sermons as literary pieces, carefully thought out and written down. He intended to publish a volume of his sermons, and prepared them for publication. It was to be called Not One World, but Two: A Miscellany of Preachments. He arranged it into six sections - Explorations, Doctrinal, General, Social, Commemorations, and Obituaries. It is an enormous joy to welcome the final publication of this set of sermons as a tribute to Vigo Auguste Demant. I hope that their publication by Fr Sławomir Nowosad and his forthcoming monograph on Demant will rescue his name and his thought from unjust neglect. It will be discovered that the problems in society he sought to analyse are still with us, that his reflections on them as powerful as ever. Andrew Louth

The book presents the gradual transformation of opera to modern, diversified forms, especially the subgenres which go beyond the accepted, conservative canon through its marriage with popular music styles. Despite their connections with opera heritage, they seem to be ignored and considered as not fully-fledged operas due to their popular appeal and close associations with mass culture. The process of transformation presented in the book covers the period from the activity of the Florentine Camerata and the first performance of Daphne by Jacopo Peri in 1597, to the release of the concept album of the rock-opera Tommy by the British rock band The Who in 1969. Although the research deals with the changes of opera to the creation of the rock-opera Tommy, it presents also other eminent works of this subgenre to illustrate fully its diversity, richness and artistic value. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood. Don Quixote, in the first part of the book, does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story. Throughout the novel, Cervantes uses such literary techniques as realism, metatheatre, and intertextuality. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1893, by Arthur Conan Doyle. The first London edition of the Memoirs in 1894 did not include "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", although all twelve stories had appeared in the Strand Magazine. The first U.S. edition included the story, but it was very quickly replaced with a revised edition that omitted it. The reasoning behind the suppression is unclear. In Britain the story was apparently removed at Doyle's request as it included adultery and so was unsuitable for younger readers. This may have also been the cause for the rapid removal of the story from the U.S. edition, and some sources state that the publishers believed the story was too scandalous for the American public. As a result, this story was not republished in the U.S. until many years later, when it was added to His Last Bow. Even today, most American editions of the canon include it with His Last Bow, while most British editions keep the story in its original place in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Additionally, when the story was removed from the Memoirs, its opening pages, where Holmes emulates Dupin, were transferred to the beginning of "The Adventure of the Resident Patient". In some later U.S. editions of the Memoirs, which still omit "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", this transfer still appears. Doyle had decided that these would be the last collection of Holmes's stories and initially decided to get him killed in "The Final Problem". However public pressure forced him to write the character again in "The Hound of Baskervilles" and resurrect him in the forthcoming "The Return of Sherlock Holmes".
