Esta obra plantea la hipótesis según la cual los estudiantes que ingresan a la universidad tienen una relación limitada e incipiente con la Cultura Escrita (CE) entendida como la articulación entre lectura, escritura y conocimiento. Si esa precaria relación se evidencia en sus modos de leer, escribir y conocer, ¿Cómo indagar sobre el fenómeno? ¿Y cómo enfrentarlo pedagógicamente? Al mismo tiempo tienen una relación intensa con la Tecnocultura Digital (TCD) desarrollada en torno a las TIC, que ha transformado las prácticas de lectura y escritura y los modos de conocer dentro y fuera del ciberespacio. La CE y la TCD configuran dos modelos cognoscitivos presentes en la educación contemporánea, y aunque corren paralelos, no son necesariamente antagónicos. ¿Cómo investigar -y potenciar- ambos modelos en las prácticas pedagógicas para fortalecer la relación de los estudiantes con la Cultura Escrita, aprovechando la infraestructura de las plataformas digitales y los conocimientos ya consolidados de la Tecnocultura? La hipótesis está respaldada por la investigación etnográfica en el aula realizada por el autor. Además de un análisis crítico de las pruebas PISA y las pruebas Saber PRO, la indagación concluye en un diagnóstico en el que se especifican, se explican y se ilustran los problemas de lectura y escritura de los estudiantes. A partir de los conceptos de oralidad, escritura, enunciación, dinámica enunciativa, canon, polisemia, sentido literal, sentido figurado, comprensión textual, entre otros, se propone una alternativa pedagógica viable para profesores y estudiantes, utilizando la TCD para fortalecer la relación con la CE.

Born 20 September 1808, at Broome Park, Kent, he was the fifth son of Sir Henry Oxenden (1756–1838), 7th Baronet Oxenden, of Broome Park; Commissioner of Dover Harbour. His mother, Mary, was the daughter of Colonel John Graham (1723–1789), of St. Lawrence House, near Canterbury; former Lieutenant governor of Georgia. Educated at Ramsgate and at Harrow School, Oxenden matriculated from University College, Oxford, on 9 June 1826; graduated B.A. 1831, M.A. 1859, and was created D.D. 10 July 1869. In December 1833, he was ordained to the curacy of Barham, Kent, where he introduced weekly cottage lectures. In 1838, he resigned his charge, and during the following seven years was incapacitated for work by continuous ill-health. From 1849 to 1869 he was rector of Pluckley with Pevington, Kent, and in 1864 was made an honorary canon of Canterbury Cathedral. At Pluckley he first commenced extemporaneous preaching, and wrote the Barham Tracts. In 1864, Oxenden married, on 14 June, Sarah (b. 1828), daughter of Joseph Hoare Bradshaw (1784–1845), a London banker and a grandson of Samuel Hoare.
