Zu den guten Eigenschaften der Kinder- und Jugendbücher von Günter Görlich gehört, dass sie einen von der ersten Seite an in die Handlung hineinziehen und relativ schnell mit ihren Hauptfiguren bekannt und sogar vertraut machen – als würde man sie und ihre Familien schon lange und gut kennen. Das gilt auch für dieses Buch, in dessen Titel das Mädchen und der Junge noch namenlos sind. Anfangs kennen sich die beiden jungen Leute noch gar nicht. Zu im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes näherer Begegnung verhilft dem Mädchen und dem Jungen ein Zusammenstoß auf einer Eisbahn, wonach das Mädchen in die Poliklinik muss: Der Arzt behandelte die Wunde und legte einen neuen Verband an. Er tröstete das Mädchen: „Wenn Sie Hosen tragen, fällt es gar nicht auf. Sie werden ein bisschen humpeln, der Schmerz vergeht nach ein paar Tagen. Es ist eine tiefe Fleischwunde. Hätte schlimmer kommen können. Eine Kufe kann den Knochen zerschmettern. Kommen Sie in drei Tagen wieder. Ich verschreibe Ihnen ein paar Tabletten. Sie hätten ruhig ein bisschen weinen können, das hilft manchmal.“ Draußen wartet der Junge, mit dem sie zusammengestoßen ist, und der sie mit seinem Moped nach Hause fährt. Da kennen sie sich vielleicht eine Stunde. Am nächsten Tag sitzt der Junge, der Frank heißt, im Zimmer des Mädchens, das Katrin heißt, von ihrem Vater aber immer nur Katja genannt wird, und wartet auf Tee. Dann erzählen Kathrin und Frank von sich und ihren Familien. Frank ist schon, Katrin soll auf die EOS, die Erweiterte Oberschule. Wenige Tage später fährt sie wie immer mit den Eltern eine Woche zum Winterurlaub in eine Waldhütte. Doch diesmal denkt sie dauernd an Frank. Diesmal will Katrin weg, möchte in die Stadt, mit dem Jungen zusammen sein. Dieser Wunsch ist so stark, dass sie es nicht schafft, sich von ihrer gedrückten Stimmung zu befreien. Und dann fasst sie einen Entschluss: Gegen Ende des Frühstücks sagt Katrin: „Ich möchte nach Hause fahren.“ In den nächsten Monaten beginnt so etwas wie eine Liebesgeschichte. Katrin will immer mit Frank zusammen sein. Doch dann sagt an einem gewöhnlichen Wochentag Frau Rumke, Katrins Klassenlehrerin, zu ihr: „Ich möchte mit dir sprechen.
