The War of the Worlds is one of the earliest stories that detail a conflict between mankind and an extraterrestrial race. It is the first-person narrative of an unnamed protagonist in Surrey and that of his younger brother in London as Earth is invaded by Martians. The novel is one of the most commented-on works in the science fiction canon. The War of the Worlds has two parts, Book One: The Coming of the Martians and Book Two: The Earth under the Martians. The unnamed narrator, a philosophically inclined author, struggles to return to his wife while seeing the Martians lay waste to the southern country outside London. Book One also imparts the experience of his brother, also unnamed, who describes events as they deteriorate in the capital, forcing him to escape the Martian onslaught by boarding a paddle steamer near Tillingham, on the Essex coast. Herbert George Wells (1866-1946), known as H. G. Wells, was a prolific English writer in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, and social commentary, and textbooks and rules for war games.

Am 20.September 1519 verließen fünf Karavellen mit 265 Mann an Bord unter dem Kommando des Portugiesen Fernando de Magellan den südspanischen Hafen Sanlucar. Ihr Auftrag war, auf dem Westkurs über den Atlantik eine angeblich schiffbare Passage von Südamerika (die spätere Magellan-Straße) und den Pazifik zu den Molukken, den "Gewürzinseln" vorzudringen und nach deren Annektierung über den Indischen Ozean, das "Kap der Stürme" entlang der Westküste Afrikas heimzukehren. Unterwegs hatte man jedoch ungewohnte Stürme und Flauten, Hitze und Kälte, Hunger und Durst, bisher unbekannte Krankheiten, Meutereien, Havarien und kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen zu bewältigen. Als der Rest der Flotte schließlich auf dem kleinsten der Schiffe, der "Victoria", nach 1124 Tagen Seereise am 7. September 1522 wieder im Heimathafen anlegte, befanden sich nur noch 18 Mann an Bord. Auch Admiral Fernando de Magellan hatte nicht überlebt, im Gegensatz zu seinem Pagen Vasco Gomez Gallego. Der rettete auch das von seinem Freund Antonio Pigafetta sorgfältig geführte Logbuch für die Nachwelt. Dieses in Teilen erhalten gebliebene Bordbuch und andere Dokumente über die erste Weltumseglung lieferten die Grundlage für das überaus spannend geschriebene Buch. Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Polish-born writer Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski). Before its 1902 publication, it appeared as a three-part series (1899) in Blackwood's Magazine. It is widely regarded as a significant work of English literature and part of the Western canon. This highly symbolic story is actually a story within a story, or frame narrative. It follows Marlow as he recounts, from dusk through to late night, his adventure into the Congo to a group of men aboard a ship anchored in the Thames Estuary. The story details an incident when Marlow, an Englishman, took a foreign assignment as a ferry-boat captain, employed by a Belgian trading company. Although the river is never specifically named, readers may assume it is the Congo River, in the Congo Free State, a private colony of King Leopold II. Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver; however, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to civilization in a cover up. Kurtz has a reputation throughout the region.
