Considerada la obra más relevante de Tristán de Jesús Medina, Mozart ensayando su requiem ha sido percibida por otros como una obra peculiar y difícil de encajar en el canon literario de la Cuba del siglo XIX. El grandioso luminar se preparaba a morir al unísono con un alma hermana y a la manera del cenobita, columbrando los horizontes que están detrás de los nuestros, resucitando antiguas promesas infalibles, consolando a los que velan, estudian, admiran, interrogan y lloran durante la dilatada agonía. La luz dejó de vivir en rayos, ofreciendo más bien en uno y otro punto de la antiquísima y fastuosa ciudad germánica, flores de luz dentro del ramaje de los árboles, lágrimas de luz en los surtidores de las fuentes, abrazos y besos de luz en las vidrieras de los balcones. Un silencio profundo, solemne, reinaba en todos los ámbitos de la población, hasta en los barrios del trabajo más ruidoso. La luz, únicamente la luz, siempre silenciosa hasta en sus triunfos más soberbios y en sus misericordias más celestes, era la que parecía vivir como soberana absoluta con la soberanía de la muerte, en aquella atmósfera de paz estática. Una noticia dolorosa quebrantaba todos los corazones. Apenas comenzó a circular, el martillo del obrero cayó del brazo que le daba vida, al pie del yunque que había atormentado toda la mañana. Trescientos hombres, ocupados en la construcción de un templo de vastísimas dimensiones, que ofrecieron por muchos meses, un golpe de vista admirable a los que contemplaban desde los balcones circunvecinos el vaivén de unos y otros, el ascenso y descenso de moles de piedra por entre los complicados andamios, el entusiasta rumor del trabajo, el consorcio del querer del hombre con las leyes severas de la naturaleza, para construir algo más grande y digno de la perpetuidad que la montaña, quedaron instantáneamente suspensos y tristes al enterarse de la nueva inesperada. Parecían entonces marineros sobre las vergas en silenciosa actitud, como cuando la nave rinde sus homenajes a la majestad de un príncipe, o solemniza momentos memorables de la historia. La gigantesca fábrica pareció herida de muerte, como si el genio que la dirigía, Amphyon u Orfeo, hubiera suspendido las armonías contagiosas de su lira.
