En el 2013, al lanzar en Granada el festival literario Centroamérica Cuenta, Sergio puntualizó que deseaba retomar un proyecto inconcluso 40 años atrás. El narrador nicaragüense es quizá el último de una estirpe de escritores y pensadores políticos que dedicó su vida a querer cambiar la realidad desde sus cimientos culturales e ideológicos, con un conocimiento casi enciclopédico de la historia centroamericana, con "pesimismo en el pensamiento y optimismo en la voluntad", como Gramsci pedía a los intelectuales".
