Ich war entschlossen, ihm eine heikle Frage zu stellen, ohne dabei meine eigene Meinung zu verleugnen. Seine genauen Formulierungen hatten mir gefallen, und ich vermutete, dass er präzise Offenheit liebte. „Was denken Sie über Afghanistan? Ich komme immer mehr zu der Ansicht, dass das Ganze ein militärischer und politischer Fehlschlag ist.“ „Sie haben völlig recht“, antwortete er. „Ein strategischer und taktischer Unsinn. Ein solcher Krieg ist nicht zu gewinnen, das wissen wir. Da fahren die sowjetischen Panzer in die Hochgebirgsschluchten und werden von oben mit Steinbrocken erledigt. Die Panzerkanonen können wegen ihres geringen Neigungswinkels überhaupt nicht eingesetzt werden.“ Wenn er auch ein wenig auswich - eine derart unverblümte Ablehnung von kompetenter Seite überraschte mich. Es war geplant, dass ich auf der Dresdner Konferenz das Schlusswort sprach. Dafür hatte ich einen Text von fünf Schreibmaschinenseiten vorbereitet. Rudi Raupach vom ZK der SED, der mich „begleitete“, hatte die Ausarbeitung gelesen und gebilligt. Ich fand es aber unmöglich, nur ein Statement zu verlesen, und ging auf meine Vorredner ein.
