Gruesome as life is there in some ways, the Kappas are refreshingly honest about their practices, and it's a return to the world above that drives the narrator insane and sends him to the mental asylum. This novel, the last work by icon of Japanese letters Ryunosuke Akutagawa, is a darkly comic and surreal satire, which challenges all the conventions of so-called polite society.

Translacja IV i VI księgi „Biogramów i poglądów słynnych filozofów” (wybór)</strong></em></p> <p>(…) Dzieło Diogenesa Laertiosa, bo o nim mowa, nosi tytuł <em>Żywoty i poglądy słynnych filozofów</em> (<em>Φιλοσόφων βίων καὶ δογμάτων συναγωγή</em>) i oceniane było przez wieki różnie, od zachwytu po dyskredytację, przeważnie zaś niedoceniane, analizowane tylko jako podręcznik filozofii czy wyraz pewnej filozofii bez wartości literackiej. Jednak wartość ta była bezsporna dla czytelników antycznych, którzy akurat tę wersję z wielu innych podobnych opisów myśli filozoficznej zachowali przez kolejne wieki, traktując je jako arcydzieło w zakresie literackiego opisu filozofii.<br /> Jeden ze najsłynniejszych polskich hellenistów, Tadeusz Sinko, napisał, że „Laërtios Diogenes” był autorem dziesięciu ksiąg tekstu, które „skompilował bezkrytycznie i nieporządnie ze źródeł biograficznych i doksograficznych”. Polski filolog klasyczny kolejnego, powojennego pokolenia, Jerzy Łanowski, także używał na określenie dzieła Diogenesa niezbyt pochwalnego określenia „niekrytyczna kompilacja”, ale dostrzegał w nim pewną wartość przez sam sens jego istnienia, wszak to jedyna, a zatem „bezcenna, historia filozofii przekazana nam przez starożytność”. Współcześni badacze Diogenesa – czy to z końca XX w., czy z pierwszych dekad XXI w., obecnie na całym świecie coraz bardziej doceniają wartość jego dzieła. Na przykład Jørgen Mejer w swej monografii domaga się „fresh analysis of Diogenes Laertius” i rzeczywiście potrzeba takiej świeżej analizy stała się ostatnio źródłem nowych, ciekawych ustaleń naukowych. Problematyka twórczości tego autora jest opracowywana od blisko stu lat niejako od nowa.
