This book argues that a set of persuasive narratives about the links between natural resource, armed conflict and peacebuilding have strongly influenced the natural resource interventions pursued by international peacebuilders. The author shows how international peacebuilders active in Liberia and Sierra Leone pursued a collective strategy to transform “conflict resources” into “peace resources” vis-à-vis a policy agenda that promoted “securitization” and “marketization” of natural resources. However, the exclusive focus on securitization and marketization have been counterproductive for peacebuilding since these interventions render invisible issues connected to land ownership, environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods and mirror pre-war governing arrangements in which corruption, exclusion and exploitation took root. Natural resource governance and peacebuilding must go beyond narrow debates about securitization and marketization, and instead be a catalyst for trust–building and cooperation that has a local focus, and pursues an inclusive agenda that not only serves the cause of peace, but the cause of people.

<div> <p>This book examines forced migration of two refugees groups in South Asia. The author discusses the claims of “belonging” of refugees, and asserts that in practice “belonging” can extend beyond the state-centric understanding of membership in South Asian states. She addresses two sets of interrelated questions: what factors determine whether refugees are relocated to their home countries in South Asia, and why do some repatriated groups re-integrate more successfully than others in “post-peace” South Asian states? This book answers these questions through a study of refugees from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who sought asylum in India and were later relocated to their countries of origin. Since postcolonial societies have a typical kind of state-formation, in South Asia’s case this has profoundly shaped questions of belonging and membership. The debate tends to focus on citizenship, making it a benchmark to demarcate inclusion and exclusion in South Asian states. In addition to qualitative analysis, this book includes narratives of Sri Lankan and Chakma refugees in post-conflict and post-peace Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively, and critiques the impact of macro policies from the bottom up. </p> </div> <div> <br> </div>

Milan Svanderlik, author of Sketches from Childhood, was born in Czechoslovakia on 27 February 1948, the day its democratic government was overthrown by the Communist Party. The ensuing doctrinaire regime, committed to a more just and equal society. Focussed first on dismantling the bourgeois establishment, and what had been the post-war ethnic cleansing of non-Slav peoples metamorphosed into the persecution of anyone failing to espouse Stalinism – once-free citizens soon found themselves imprisoned within borders that bristled fiercely with barbed wire and armed guards. Milan's Czech parents were born in Yugoslavia, where his father fought with Tito's Partizans to liberate that nation from the occupying Nazi forces. After the war, he moved his young family to Northern Czechoslovakia, seeking a congenial new life amongst fellow Czechs. Such dreams were shattered when the Czech Communist coup coincided with Marshal Tito's growing intransigence towards Stalin: because of Milan's father's past links with Tito, he was immediately suspect. The family was ostracised, with social exclusion quickly morphing into several years of virtual house arrest; categorised as 'undesirables', they were finally deported in 1955. These Sketches, the story of a childhood lived through turbulent times, comprise both written memoir and some 36 contemporary photographs, focussing in detail on the period, 1948 to 1956. Born in Czechoslovakia, the author, Milan Svanderlik, grew up in Yugoslavia, worked briefly in Switzerland, and has lived for almost 50 years in London. A photographer, artist and writer, he is a veteran observer of the extraordinary diversity and beauty of nature, people and life in general.
