  4. Six Catalan Poets

This book is also available as an ebook: buy it from Amazon here. Six Catalan Poets is the ninth in Arc's New Voices from Europe and Beyond series of poetry in translation. It features the work of four Catalans, one Valencian and one Mallorcan – Josep Lluís Aguiló, Elies Barberà, Manuel Forcano, Gemma Gorga, Jordi Julià, Carles Torner – along with an introductory essay which sets the poets in the wider context of a culture perpetually overcoming adversity. The Catalan originals appear on facing pages alongside English translations by Anna Crowe. Pere Ballart is Professor of Literary Theory at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Anna Crowe was born in Plymouth, and now lives in St Andrews, where she was involved in establishing the StAnza Poetry Festival. Two of her collections of translations of the Catalan poet Joan Margarit have been published by Bloodaxe Books: Tugs in the Fog: Selected Poems (2006, a Poetry Book Society Recommended Translation) and Strangely Happy (2011). She also co-edited the Scottish Poetry Library/Carcanet anthology of Catalan poetry, Light Off Water (2007).

  7. Vassal State

'Provocative and detailed ... Excellent' The Telegraph 'Shocking and meticulous' Danny Dorling 'An eye-opening revelation ... a must-read' Joel Bakan THE TELEGRAPH BEST BOOKS OF 2024 British politicians love to vaunt the benefits of the UK's supposed 'special relationship' with the US. But are we really America's economic partner – or its colony? Vassal State lays bare the extent to which US corporations own and control Britain's economy: how American business chiefs decide what we're paid, what we buy and how we buy it. US companies have carved up Britain between them, siphoning off enormous profits, buying up our most lucrative firms and assets, and extracting huge rents from UK PLC – all while paying little or no tax. Meanwhile, policymakers, from Whitehall mandarins to NHS chiefs, shape their decisions to suit the whims of our American corporate overlords. Based on his 40 years of business experience, devastating new research and interviews with the major players, Angus Hanton exposes why Britain has become the poor transatlantic relation – and what we can do to change it.

  11. The Spanish Italian Border

As the title suggests, this is a book that contorts the world we know, oddly fluid and yet grounded in subjects that range from rural Ireland to sub-maritime journeys to Spain, from unheard of languages to ghost dogs. Through acute observations and litanies, there are echoes of song and chants that pull you innocently through to often shocking climaxes. However, never lost underneath all these poems is a genuine celebration of life and its peculiarities. Róisín Tierney was born in Dublin in 1963 and studied Psychology and Philosophy at University College Dublin. She moved to London in 1985, where she worked in many areas, from theatrical make-up artist to museum administrator. After several years teaching in Spain (Valladolid and Granada), and Ireland (Dublin) she is now settled in London. Her poetry has appeared in anthologies from Donut Press, Ondt & Gracehoper and Unfold Press. This book is also available as a eBook. Buy it from Amazon here.

  14. As I Said: Selected Poems

These poems contemplate the poet's native land of Russia, while at the same time casting a jaundiced eye on the alien culture of America, where he spent the final years of his life. Whether absorbed by the world of literature (particularly his fellow poets) or relating real-life experiences, Loseff conjures up a restless, frequently disturbing universe, full of complex imagery, rich literary allusion and formal experiment. Lev Loseff was born in 1937, grew up in Leningrad and worked as a journalist in northern Sakhalin, and as a magazine editor and children's playwright. He emigrated to America in 1976, where he later taught Russian literature at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. He died in the USA in 2009. G.S. Smith was Professor of Russian at the University of Oxford from 1986 to 2003. He translated the bilingual anthology Contemporary Russian Poetry (1993), and worked in collaboration with Lev Loseff for many years. 18. Six Armenian Poets

This book is also available as an ebook: buy it from Amazon here. The latest anthology in Arc's 'New Voices from Europe and Beyond' series features the work of six of Armenia's poets – three men, Anatoli Hovhannisyan, Khachik Manoukyan and Hrachya Saroukhan and three women, Violet Grigorian, Azniv Sahakyan and Hasmik Simonian. Together they have all helped to shape the face of contemporary Armenian poetry. Of the six, Grigorian and Hovhannisyan originally began writing in the age of Stalin, only becoming more visible and appreciated since independence. Saroukhan, Sahakyan and Manoukyan established themselves in post-Stalin Soviet Armenia, while the youngest poet, Hasmik Simonian, is a writer of the new Armenia, out of the shadow of the Soviet past. This is a bi-lingual edition, with the Armenian original and the English translation on facing pages. Razmik Davoyan is the unofficial Armenian poet laureate, and recipient of the President's Prize for Literature (2003). Widely published in Armenian, Russian and Czech, his collections in English are Selected Poems (Macmillan, 2002) and Whispers and Breath of the Meadows (Arc, 2010).

  22. While I Am Drawing Breath

This book is also available as a eBook. Buy it from Amazon here. The experience of living in the Chernivtsi ghetto under the Nazis remains a dark undertow in all Rose Ausländer's poetry. The hardships of a life in hiding, the constant fear of Nazi terror and concentration camps are all harrowingly present, while other poems speak to the mother for whose sake she endured. After the war Ausländer's later poetry brought her prizes and acclaim, establishing her extraordinary simplicity as a distinctive voice in German poetry. Rose Ausländer was born in Bucovina, on what is now the Romanian/Ukrainian border. Her first book of poems in German, The Rainbow, was published in Bucharest in 1939, with the majority of its print run destroyed during Nazi occupation. In the Chernivtsi ghetto she became friends with Paul Celan; the pair would meet again in Paris in 1957. Her second collection, Blind Summer, appeared in 1965. Rose died in Düsseldorf in 1988.

  24. Miranda's Shadow

Shortlisted for the 2013 William Trevor / Elizabeth Bowen International Short Story Award. Best known for her novels, Kitty Fitzgerald is also an accomplished short-story writer. Miranda's Shadow, her debut full collection, brings together a series of provocative, richly conceived stories that share the same dark, fabulous drama that saw her novel Pigtopia (Faber, 2006) garner such grand acclaim. Just what is Alice Noonan's secret? And who is the strange wino with the voice of an angel? And why does nobody go in or out of the Faulkners' house? These are tales of temptation, suspicion and murder – from savage fairies to the photographer who saw too much. "A writer of stylistic daring who cuts her own furrow." The Scotsman Kitty Fitzgerald was born in Ireland. Her short story 'The Bones of St Ignatius' won the Notes from the Underground / Latitude Festival Short Story Competition in 2009. Her fourth novel, Pigtopia, was published by Faber in 2006, and has been translated into more than twenty languages. She is the editor of the Iron Press anthology Root: New Stories by North-East Writers, published in February 2013. Four of her plays have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4. She lives in Northumberland.
