This book examines the nexus of cities and oceans and the interrelations between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11 and 14, just after the first two critical years following the milestone year of hope in 2015. It advocates for actions both for sustainable cities, the largest interconnected and only human ecosystem, and for the global ocean that is the largest physical ecosystem. Cutting-edge concepts and actions are presented by and for cities and oceans, following the global engagements during the years 2015-2017.

In the era of global geopolitics, cities offer major democratic spaces between the micro-regulations of the local communities and the governance of the global commons. The role of education, trust, and citizen empowerment cannot be stressed enough. This book offers an evidence-based, holistic and integrated view of key urban and ocean sustainability issues at the horizon of 2030 and of 2050. The chapters cover the most prominent issues at the heart of the matter, and highlight systemic multi-stakeholder eco-responses towards sustainability with economic, social, environmental dimensions, including political and cultural aspects.

This book offers a full exploration of cities and seas with an emphasis on vigorous paradigm shifts, redesigning human systems, and reconciling them with nature. Building on robust evidence, and transformational cases, it provides structured advice for world leaders, stakeholders and scholars.

Precision Nanometrology describes the new field of precision nanometrology, which plays an important part in nanoscale manufacturing of semiconductors, optical elements, precision parts and similar items. It pays particular attention to the measurement of surface forms of precision workpieces and to stage motions of precision machines. The first half of the book is dedicated to the description of optical sensors for the measurement of angle and displacement, which are fundamental quantities for precision nanometrology. The second half presents a number of scanning-type measuring systems for surface forms and stage motions. The systems discussed include: • error separation algorithms and systems for measurement of straightness and roundness, • the measurement of micro-aspherics, • systems based on scanning probe microscopy, and • scanning image-sensor systems. Precision Nanometrology presents the fundamental and practical technologies of precision nanometrology with a helpful selection of algorithms, instruments and experimental data. It will be beneficial for researchers, engineers and postgraduate students involved in precision engineering, nanotechnology and manufacturing.

Regional aspects are often neglected in the debate on initial vocational training. What is the role of geographical dimensions in vocational education? In her dissertation the author investigates the interaction of region and vocational training. After outlining the theoretical basis, the author presents her empirical research on the question of how vocational education of skilled workers differs with geographic regions, using the field of micro-technology as an example. Another research topic is the regional further education and vocational training networks. The author interviewed apprentices and trainees, instructors and those active in networks, on the relevance of regional aspects of vocational training.

Introduces readers to micro and local power markets and their use for local initiatives, grid integration, and future applications This book provides the basis for understanding micro power markets, emphasizing its application for local initiatives, the grid integration of renewable-based generation, and facilitating the decarbonization of the future electrical networks. It gives readers a comprehensive overview of the market operation, and highlights the basis of the design of local and micro markets. Micro and Local Power Markets starts by covering the economics and basic principle of power markets, including the fundamentals of the power trading (for both wholesale and local markets). Following a definition of both micro and local (technical and economic aspects) power markets, the book then looks at the organization of such markets. It describes the design of those power markets, isolated from the wholesale markets, and examines the methodologies of the interaction between these power markets and wholesale markets. The book also presents cognitive business models for micro and local power markets, as well as the regulatory issues concerning them. * Introduces the basic principle of power markets * Defines micro and local power markets * Outlines the design of micro and local power markets, including the principles, as well as the trading schemes, flexibility, and services * Discusses methodologies of the interaction between micro and local power markets and wholesale markets * Presents business models for micro and local power markets * Summarizes regulatory issues around micro and local power markets Micro and Local Power Markets is an ideal book for upper undergraduate students in engineering, as well as for early researchers in the energy sector. It is also recommended for any scientist and engineer being introduced to the field of power systems and their organization.
