10. Woman with the Iceberg Eyes: Oriana F. Wilson

Captain Scott's expedition to the Antarctic, the most famous story of exploration in the world, played out on the great ice stage in the south. Oriana Wilson, wife of Scott's best friend and fellow explorer Dr Edward Wilson, was watching from the wings. She is the missing link between many of the notable polar names of the time and was allowed into a man's world at a time when the British suffragettes were marching. Oriana is the lens through which their secrets are revealed. What really happened both in the Antarctic and at home? Why did Scott's Terra Nova expedition nearly end in mutiny before it had even begun? Were the explorers' diaries as 'heroic' as they appeared to be? Only Oriana can tell. She began as a dutiful housewife but emerged as a scientist and collector in her own right, and was the first white woman to venture into the jungles of Darwin, Australia. Edward Wilson named Oriana Ridge, a little-known piece of Antarctica, after her on their tenth wedding anniversary. Oriana Wilson has been quiet for a century, but this biography gives her a voice and provides a unique insight into the early twentieth century through her clear, blue 'iceberg eyes'.

  15. On the Origin of Species

The book that forever transformed our understanding of the natural world. First published in 1859, On the Origin of Species is Charles Darwin's groundbreaking work that introduced the theory of evolution by natural selection—a concept that reshaped science, religion, and humanity's place in the universe. Drawing on years of meticulous observation and research during his voyage on the HMS Beagle, Darwin explains how species evolve over time through the survival and reproduction of the fittest individuals. His ideas challenged centuries of established belief and laid the foundation for modern biology. Accessible, methodical, and deeply insightful, this is more than a scientific treatise—it is one of the most influential books ever written. "The most important single work in the history of the biological sciences." – The New York Times "Darwin didn't just write about evolution—he transformed the way we see life itself." – Scientific American ✅ Why Readers Love It: The cornerstone of evolutionary biology and natural history Essential reading for scientists, students, and curious minds A blend of rigorous observation, persuasive argument, and clear prose Click 'Buy Now' to explore the scientific masterpiece that changed the world—and continues to shape our understanding of life today.

Jordi Gracia

  26. Charles Darwin

When Charles Darwin announced his theory of evolution by natural selection, he did more than transform biology. Before his great work, humans were comfortably different from other life: a special creation. By showing how life on Earth evolved, Darwin told us that humans too are part of nature. His decisive experience – a five-year round-the-world voyage on the Beagle – set him thinking about the diversity of life: ideas that would challenge the scientific establishment and Victorian society. Darwin for years built his evidence for evolution, even as he realised that such ideas were leading him straight into controversy and dispute. This updated, concise yet informative account of Darwin's life and work makes vividly clear the personal influences of the man and his work – and why his discoveries continue to influence us all.

  28. Satan Came to Floreana

When in 1929 Dr. Frederick Ritter, the well known brilliant German doctor and philosopher, abandoned civilization and with a woman companion determined to live like Adam and Eve in a South Sea tropical paradise, the world learned that a new kind of Robinson Crusoe was born. Everybody has read the book "Robinson Crusoe", and most boys and many men would like to go back to nature and live on a tropical island, where there are no mobile phones, auto mobiles, nuisance laws or taxes. And now and then somebody actually does the thing so many have wanted to do. Dr. Ritter, one of the worlds most important scientists and nearly considered being "a saint" by his fans, decided to begin his new life on the remote island of Floreana in order to increase the knowledge of the world by creating a new philosophy. He searched for a paradise of solitude to concentrate on his important studies but the evil world disturbed and killed him. He was murdered! Some say by Dore Strauch, his devotee. No one knows, and no one will ever know. Only one thing is clear in this case: The world never had recovered from this tragic loss. This most carefully planned back-to-nature experiments made by Dr. Frederick Ritter and Dore Strauch became one of the most admired events in human history. They selected one of the Galapagos Islands, the most perfect climate in the world, right on the equator, but always cooled by the ceaseless trade winds. It was the famous Galapagos Islands where Darwin, the world's greatest naturalist, made his first discoveries, which laid the foundation of the theory of evolution. Unfortunately, the escapism of Dr. Ritter caught the attention of the press. First, he was considered being a quirky fellow. But the world did not forget Dr. Ritter. More and more people were fascinated by the story of this remarkable man and his mistress. Adam and Eve on Floreana Island mutated into a real sensation of Galapagos. Numerous unwanted visitors and even entire expeditions appeared on the secluded island. The events pointed to a deadly drama. For the sake of clarification of facts it is necessary to translate and to publish the written records of Dr. Ritter. Despite his death he should tell his story in his own words. Although everything Ritter had noticed was written in German, everyone in the US can understand him now, because of this first translation in history by famous author Nicolas Montemolinos.
