Lovis macht sich auf den Weg, auf eine Reise rund ums westliche Mittelmeer: Marseille, Gibraltar, Sizilien. Und, auf den Spuren von Bruno Siegwart, zurück in die dreißiger Jahre. Siegwart, ein unverdrossener Schweizer Ingenieur, hat sich mit Haut und Haar und Rechenschieber dem gigantischen Projekt Atlantropa verschrieben. Der Erfinder dieser Utopie, der deutsche Architekt Herman Sörgel, wollte das Mittelmeer absenken, um Strom zu gewinnen. Siegwart lieferte ihm die Berechnungen, unaufgefordert, aus reiner Begeisterung – und die Idee, die Flüsse Afrikas zu stauen, um noch mehr Elektrizität zu produzieren, für Europa. Als Lovis ihn aufstöbert, ihn mit Fragen bedrängt, versteckt sich Siegwart hinter seinem Glauben an die Technik. Diesen Glauben kennt Lovis vom eigenen Vater, auch er war Ingenieur und Lovis oft mit ihm unterwegs zwischen Betonmischern, Tiefladern, Baukränen und hohen Staumauern. Christoph Keller beschäftigt sich seit Jahren journalistisch und literarisch mit dem Mittelmeer und mit kolonialen Praktiken der Schweiz. Deshalb stach ihm das gut tausendseitige Manuskript von Bruno Siegwart, das er im Deutschen Museum in München aufstöberte, sofort ins Auge. Doch der Roman, den er aus diesem Fund destilliert hat, erzählt weit mehr als die Geschichte einer größenwahnsinnigen Utopie.
