  5. Vaults of Dairy: The Strange Financial Architecture of Cheese Backed Loans

In the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, standard banking collateral like real estate or stock portfolios is often replaced by something entirely unexpected: giant wheels of cheese. For decades, local banks have accepted highly prized Parmigiano-Reggiano as hard financial collateral. Because true Parmesan takes up to three years to age, dairy farmers face a massive liquidity gap. To solve this, banks built specialized, climate-controlled vaults to hold hundreds of thousands of cheese wheels, treating the maturing dairy exactly like appreciating gold bars while issuing immediate cash loans to the farmers. This book breaks down the mechanics of this highly localized, bizarre financial ecosystem. It explores how banks evaluate the risk of biological assets, manage spoilage, and physically secure a highly edible commodity. Uncover the hidden intersections between centuries-old agricultural traditions and modern liquidity management, and learn how regional economies engineer brilliant solutions to survive rigid global financial systems.

  11. Steam-ships

Steam-ships is a comprehensive exploration of the evolution, mechanics, and impact of steam-powered vessels, authored by Robert Henry Thurston. This detailed volume delves into the history and development of steam navigation, tracing its origins from early experimental models to the grand transatlantic liners that revolutionized global travel and commerce. The book meticulously examines the principles of steam propulsion, the design and construction of steam engines, and the technological advancements that enabled ships to traverse vast oceans with unprecedented speed and reliability. Thurston provides vivid descriptions of pioneering inventors and engineers, such as James Watt and Robert Fulton, whose innovations laid the foundation for the steamship era. The narrative covers significant milestones, including the launch of the first practical steamships, the challenges faced in adapting steam power to maritime use, and the fierce competition between paddle wheels and screw propellers. Readers are introduced to iconic vessels like the SS Great Eastern and the SS Savannah, whose voyages marked turning points in maritime history. Beyond technical details, Steam-ships offers insights into the social and economic transformations brought about by steam navigation. The book discusses how steamships facilitated international trade, migration, and cultural exchange, shrinking the world and connecting distant continents. It also addresses the impact on naval warfare, with steam-powered warships altering the balance of power at sea. Richly illustrated with diagrams and engravings, Steam-ships serves as both an educational resource and a tribute to human ingenuity. Thurston’s engaging prose makes complex engineering concepts accessible to general readers, while his thorough research ensures the book’s value to historians and maritime enthusiasts alike. Whether recounting dramatic ocean crossings or explaining the inner workings of a marine engine, Steam-ships captures the spirit of an era defined by innovation and adventure on the high seas.

  16. Liverpool's Children in the 1950s

Full of the warmth and excitement of growing up in the 1950s, awakening nostalgia for times that seemed cosy and carefree with families at last enjoying peacetime, this book is packed with the experience of school days, playtime, holidays, toys, games, clubs and hobbies conjuring up the genuine atmosphere of a bygone era. As the decade progressed, rationing ended and children's pocket money was spent on goodies like Chocstix, Spangles, Wagon Wheels and Fry's Five Boys. Television brought Bill and Ben, The Adventures of Robin Hood and, for teenagers, The Six-Five Special, along with coffee bars and rock 'n' roll. This book opens a window on an exciting period of optimism, when anything seemed possible, described by the children and teenagers who experienced it. Liverpool's traditional sense of community, strengthened by the war years, provided a secure background from which children and teenagers could welcome a second Elizabethan era.
