<p></p> <p>This volume highlights recent research efforts in the conservation and investigation of works of art on wood. Through eleven case studies it showcases different experimental methods ranging from X-ray analysis of objects to the study of cross-sections made from micro-samples. </p> <p>New research focusing on the technical study, treatment and assessment of works of art on wood in its many forms is featured in this edited volume. Technical studies include the attribution and investigations of a triptych by Hans Memling and a sculpture from workshop of Michel and Gregor Erhart, decorated Syrian rooms, and investigations of finely carved Gothic wooden objects. Synchrotron-based methods are presented for studying the alteration of 19th c. verdigris in Norway, and multi-analytical methods are employed for the investigations of 16th to 19th c. East Asian lacquer from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Novel methods for the cleaning of gilded surfaces using gels and emulsions are shown, as are innovative strategies for the consolidation for waterlogged wood, providing key data for the assessment of risks and benefits of new methods, and the short and long-term effects on gilding layers and archaeological wood. The book clearly shows how collaboration between engineers, physicists, biologists and chemists and conservators of different types of materials can lead to new research in conservation science. This book is crucial reading for conservators and conservation scientists, as well as for technical art historians, providing key methodological case studies of polychromy from different temporal and geographical contexts.</p> <br> <p></p>

Das Chronische Erschöpfungs-Syndrom (früher chron. Müdigkeits-Syndrom) [CFS = Chronic Fatigue Syndrome] - man kann es als "Stief- oder Halbbruder"! des weltweit in aller Munde stehenden Burn-Out-Syndroms (BOS) bezeichnen – fristet in der Medizin, zumal der wissenschaftlichen (Schul-)Medizin noch immer ein regelrechtes Schattendasein mit weitgehend fehlender Akzeptanz und vielmals auch mangelndem (Fach-)Wissen. Fakt ist: CFS war bei und in 'Insidern' – insbesondere Ganzheitsmedizinern – schon bekannt und als Krankheit anerkannt, als die Krankheit in der wissenschaftlichen Medizin noch – wenn überhaupt – v.a. in die "Psycho-Ecke" platziert worden war (und leider auch noch immer wird!). Fakt ist ferner: Zwischen Burnout und sonstigen Fatigue-Syndromen (z.B. bei Krebskrankheiten & Leukämien, Multipler Sklerose, Tuberkulose) und CFS finden sich "ähnliche Beschwerdebilder & Krankheitsverläufe", aber nur ähnliche. Steht bei Burnout z.B. die psychische Dekompensation an oberster negativer Rangstelle, so herrscht beim CFS die physische Erschöpfung zuerst vor; im Vollbild aller Fatigue-Erkrankungen sind aber aller Ebenen des Menschlichen Organismus unisono betroffen. Fakt ist aber auch: Wie ein Burnout, so muss eine jede Erkrankung an CFS individuell ("personalisiert") und ganzheitlich behandelt werden und im besten Falle mit einem multi-modalen Konzept aus schulmedizinischen und naturheilkundlichen Möglichkeiten. Kurzum: "ganzheitlich!"

Bedeutete die Erkrankung an "Lungentuberkulose" bis zur Entwicklung der "Tuberkulostatika" eine schwere Zäsur nicht nur in der Gesundheit des Kranken, sondern in seiner Lebenserwartung dar, stellt die Erkrankung (mit steigenden Erkrankungszahlen) an "Lungenkrebs" nach wie vor ein Lebensrisiko - trotz aller medizinischen Fortschritte in Diagnostik und Therapie - dar, so macht ein "fatales Trio an chronischen Lungenkrankheiten" - Asthma bronchiale, Lungenemphysem & COPD – ganz besonders zu schaffen: primär den Betroffenen, da die Krankheiten (noch) nicht heilbar sind und dann auch den Behandlern. Die Zahl der von diesen chronisch-obstruktiven Lungenkrankheiten betroffenen Menschen geht weltweit in den hohen Millionenbereich. Und die Erkrankungszahlen nehmen ständig zu; u.a. ein "stolzer" Preis für unser modernes Leben mit all seinen Umweltbelastungen und dazu das Quantum an eigen-verschuldeten = hausgemachten Schadenselementen. Ganz gleich, um welche Krankheit aus diesem Trio es sich handelt - zwischen diesen bestehen zudem 'fließende Übergänge' -, meine langjährige Erfahrung findet sich immer wieder bestätigt: Die Behandlung ist umso erfolgreicher und umso geringer für den Kranken belastend, wenn diese sich darstellt als individuelles, variables und multi-modales Behandlungskonzept als synergistische Symbiose von Schulmedizin (sie hat absolutes Primat!) und seriösen Optionen der biolog.-naturheilkundlichen Medizin i.S.d. "Ganzheitsmedizin".
