An ever increasing number of local and regional ecological catastrophes plague humanity. They are symptoms of an environmental crisis which is in the process of transforming at an accelerated pace into a global environmental catastrophe. As their chief causes are to be found in the capitalist profit system, the environmental question today calls for a society-changing struggle. This is why we need a new environmental movement which draws a clear dividing line to imperialist environmentalism and organizes its ranks. Militantly, purposefully and on a global scale it must confront the willful destruction of the natural foundations of life by those in power. The book's polemics are intentional. Taking an unequivocal position it intervenes in the debate over the strategy how to resolve the environmental issue.

It has been known for some time that Mr. Lang has added ghosts to his hobbies. In the volume before us, " The Book of Dreams and Ghosts,'' Mr. Lang offers a large collection of ghost stories old and new, and his opinions on "appearances." As far as we can gather Mr. Lang's attitude from these pages, which have much of the vagueness of expression that goes with memoirs of the supernatural, he disbelieves in traditional ghosts, the ghosts that do things-but wishes it were otherwise. Like all persons of poetical or romantic temperament, he would prefer to believe in them. They would make life so much more interesting and exciting. This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. Has Samuel Huntington's proposed "clash of civilizations" actually happened in the post-1945 era? Events such as 9/11 2001 or the crisis due to caricatures of Mohammed might suggest it has. The topic of culture and conflict has been the subject of fierce debate among scholars and the public alike over the last two decades. The Bertelsmann Stiftung, which has been committed to promoting international cultural dialogue for many years now, is publishing "Culture and Conflict in Global Perspective", a theoretically-informed definition of cultural conflicts and a world-wide mapping of such conflicts between 1945 and 2007. The publication is based on an empirical study that explores in what conflicts cultural factors played a role and to what extent they influenced the intensity of violence in the respective conflicts. The study and the explanations derived from it form an important instrument to foster cultural dialogue for peaceful coexistence in a globalized world.

These notes are no spiritual guide in a common sense. It is not made for people searching for the truth without the ability for self-doubt. Neither does it help anyone who is literally hunting for new realizations by devouring evey piece of literature that promises to provide them with new intellectual models. Being a mental explosive charge under the fundament of all kinds of transported realizations this script shows a critical point of view towards the common belief that there is no realization for the individual but one of the variety of collective images and inventories that would provide the personality with its own ideas. After all we are not what we believe to be. Everyone believes to be that what distinguishes him or her from others - the selfl-image he has been stamped with by his environment. Though that what we express towards the outside world is only a fraction of our true nature. Because: The search for the truth can not be accomplished with the help of the normal dual thinking - The hindrance which is preventing us from reaching our goals is situated in the dual way of our perception. That is why the occurring magical question is: "How can I become conscious of what I am forced to be?" Only when I have found out about this will I truly understand who I am.

The preface of the book gives credit to Mrs.Lang for these beautful stories which she did out of old romances, the editing being the work of Andrew Lang. Which ever one may deserve the "lion's share" of the authorship we welcome this charming collection of tales which are worthy the author from whom we have been accustomed, for many years, to expect the most beautiful of modern fairy tales. There is no danger of being forced to take the editor's advice: if we do not like one story to try another. From the moment we fell under the spell of William and the Werwolf there was not a doubt in our minds that every one of these classic romances must be read in regular order from beginning to end. A book of such rare literary merit, so exquisitely bound and illustrated is a valuable addition to young people's libraries. This book is fully illustrated and annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer.
