This book contains now several HTML tables of contents that will make reading a real pleasure! The Last of the Mohicans is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in January 1826. It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time. Its narrative flaws were criticized from the start, and its length and elaborately formal prose style have reduced its appeal to later readers. Regardless, The Last of the Mohicans is widely read in American literature courses. This second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy is the best known. The Pathfinder, written 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel. Cooper named a principal character Uncas after the most famous of the Mohicans. The real Mohicans lived in the colony of Connecticut in the mid-seventeenth century, and not in the New York frontier a century later. Uncas was a Mohegan, not a Mohican, and Cooper's usage has helped to confuse the names of two tribes to the present day. When John Uncas, his last surviving male descendant died in 1842, the Newark Daily Advertiser wrote "Last of the Mohegans Gone" lamenting the extinction of the tribe. The writer was not aware that Mohegans still existed then and to the present day. The story takes place in 1757 during the Seven Years' War (known in America as the French and Indian War), when France and the United Kingdom battled for control of the American and Canadian colonies. During this war, the French often allied themselves with Native American tribes in order to gain an advantage over the British, with unpredictable and often tragic results. Source: Wikipedia

The Prairie: A Tale (1827) is a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, the 3rd novel written by him featuring Natty Bumppo. His fictitious frontier hero Bumppo is never called by his name, but is instead referred to as "the trapper" or "the old man." Chronologically The Prairie is the 5th & final installment of the Leatherstocking Tales, though it was published before The Pathfinder (1841) & The Deerslayer (1842). It depicts Natty in the final year of his life still proving helpful to people in distress on the American frontier. The book frequently references characters & events from the two books previously published in the Leatherstocking Tales as well as the two which Cooper wouldn't write for more than ten years. Continuity with The Last of the Mohicans is indicated by the appearance of the grandson of Duncan & Alice Heyward & the noble Pawnee chief Hard Heart, whose name is English for the French nickname for the Delaware, le Coeur-dur.

Three Little Lines: Silverton Railroad; Silverton, Gladstone and Northerly; Silverton Northern is a comprehensive historical account that delves into the fascinating story of three narrow-gauge railroads that once traversed the rugged San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Authored by John A. and Barbara B. K. McGuire, this meticulously researched volume chronicles the conception, construction, and operation of the Silverton Railroad, the Silverton, Gladstone and Northerly, and the Silverton Northern—collectively known as the three little lines. The book explores the vision and determination of Otto Mears, the legendary Pathfinder of the San Juans, whose entrepreneurial spirit and engineering prowess were instrumental in overcoming the formidable challenges posed by the region's treacherous terrain and harsh climate. Through vivid narrative and a wealth of historical photographs, maps, and illustrations, readers are transported back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when these railroads played a pivotal role in the development of Colorado's mining industry and the growth of the remote mountain communities they served. Three Little Lines provides detailed insights into the daily operations, rolling stock, and unique engineering feats of each railroad, including the famous looping switchbacks, high trestles, and tunnels that made these lines both marvels of their time and beloved subjects for railroad enthusiasts. The book also examines the economic booms and busts that shaped the fate of the railroads, the colorful characters who worked and traveled on them, and the enduring legacy they left on the landscape and culture of the San Juan region. Richly illustrated and thoroughly documented, Three Little Lines is an essential resource for historians, railfans, and anyone captivated by the romance and adventure of Colorado's narrow-gauge railroads. It stands as a tribute to the ingenuity, perseverance, and spirit of those who built and operated these remarkable lines, preserving their stories for future generations.

OF all the great men of action who since the Conquest have guided the course of English policy, it is probable that none is less known to the reader of history than Richard Neville Earl of Warwick and Salisbury. The only man of anything approaching his eminence who has been treated with an equal neglect is Thomas Cromwell, and of late years the great minister of Henry the Eighth is beginning to receive some of the attention that is his due. But for the Kingmaker, the man who for ten years was the first subject of the English Crown, and whose figure looms out with a vague grandeur even through the misty annals of the Wars of the Roses, no writer has spared a monograph. Every one, it is true, knows his name, but his personal identity is quite ungrasped. Nine persons out of ten if asked to sketch his character would find, to their own surprise, that they were falling back for their information to Lord Lytton Last of the Barons or Shakespeare Henry the Sixth.

Colonial adventures in a 6 volume collection set on the „Dark Continent”. Sanders and Co. return to Africa (following the events in Bones in London) to bring the old Kings country under the Union Jack and to try and find what has happened to a missionary and his daughter. It is written in a delightfully humorous style. „Sandi, the King-maker” among other novels by Edgar Wallace conveys the paternal attitude that England’s officials felt toward the native tribes of Africa. Part of his famous „African novels” („Sanders of the River” series), this volume is highly recommended for those who have read and enjoyed others in the series, and it would make for a worthy addition to any collection.
