Die Änderungen, welche ein BGE bewirken könnte, sind weitreichend. So wäre Arbeit mehr als bisher eine persönliche Wahl, unangenehme Jobs müssten besser bezahlt werden. Eva Douma ist sich sicher: "Kernfrage der Auseinandersetzung ist, ob es genügt, Mitglied einer wohlhabenden Gesellschaft zu sein, um ohne weitere Verpflichtungen, ohne Existenzangst auf einem niedrigen Niveau einfach leben zu können."
