<p>This book addresses the basics of interval/fuzzy set theory, artificial neural networks (ANN) and computational methods. It presents step-by-step modeling for application problems along with simulation and numerical solutions. </p>In general, every science and engineering problem is inherently biased by uncertainty, and there is often a need to model, solve and interpret problems in the world of uncertainty. At the same time, exact information about models and parameters of practical applications is usually not known and precise values do not exist. <p></p> <p> This book discusses uncertainty in both data and models. It consists of seven chapters covering various aspects of fuzzy uncertainty in application problems, such as shallow water wave equations, static structural problems, robotics, radon diffusion in soil, risk of invasive alien species and air quality quantification. These problems are handled by means of advanced computational and fuzzy theory along with machine intelligence when the uncertainties involved are fuzzy. The proposed computational methods offer new fuzzy computing methods that help other areas of knowledge construction where inexact information is present.<br></p> <p> </p>

<p>The book covers the three largest sources of particulate matter pollution in five chapters. These sources constitute three of the top ten public health problems in the world today and far outstrip any other environmental health threats in terms of health impact. The book begins with indoor solid fuel combustion for cooking in lower income countries and tells the story of how this problem was identified and recent efforts to eliminate it. The book next looks at tobacco smoking and second hand smoke, again reviewing the history of how these problems were identified scientifically and the fierce industry push back against the science. The last two chapters cover ambient particulate matter in the outdoor air. They address fine and ultrafine particles, describing the pioneering work on fine PM, the subsequent industry attacks on the scientists and then the emerging interest and concern about ultrafine particles, an area of research in which the author has participated. This book is geared towards non-scientists, including high school and college students.</p>

<p>This book seeks to bridge the gap between academic, political and military thinking concerning the success and failure of peacekeeping operations and their termination. Exit strategies have recently gained attention in political, military, academic and public debates, due to the Western engagement in international and intrastate conflicts since the end of the Cold War. Yet, many of those debates took place separately. This volume, which is predominantly a joint product of academics and the military of the Faculty of Military Sciences of the Netherlands Defence Academy, shows new venues by bridging the putative political-military divide. </p> <p>Drawing on theory, empirics, and personal experiences the authors address exits at political, strategic, operational and tactical levels of current and past military missions and interventions, ranging from decolonisation wars to Afghanistan and Iraq. Although some of those conflicts are still ongoing, valid inferences can be drawn. An important one is that exit forms a problem for those who leave and for those who stay. While political and military objectives might not have been reached and many of those involved have the feeling that the job is still not yet done, the termination of the entire mission or transitions at operational level necessitate both departures and handovers-takeovers and are thereby characterised by discontinuities and continuities at the same time. Le bonheur est quelquefois très loin de l'image que l'on s'en était construite... Francine s'apprête à le découvrir dans ce roman rempli d'émotions.Un déménagement dans un quartier ou une rue que l'on ne connaît pas, représente toujours une part de risque : c'est, soit la solitude, le sentiment d'abandon, de petites habitudes frileuses et sans cesse répétées, soit une ouverture totale sur du nouveau que l'on ne pouvait imaginer.Francine, quadragénaire et célibataire, vient s'installer dans une rue de Schaerbeek, qu'elle imagine calme et tranquille, pour se reposer du travail que lui impose sa profession d'assistante sociale...Baste !...elle n'a pas fait le bon choix ! Sa rue est toujours emplie d'enfants, de cris, de jeux, de chahuts, quelquefois même de disputes, de cris... ; la clochette de sa maison n'arrête pas de résonner, pour des services à lui demander, à toute heure du jour et de la nuit, pas une journée où elle peut respirer tranquillement, bref, son « nid personnel » devient très vite la seconde résidence de certains de ses voisins...d'en face ! Mais qui sont ces voisins? Qui sont ces gens « sans gêne », opportunistes ? Qui, chez nous, aurait l'audace d'aller demander un renseignement à son voisin, à minuit, aux meilleures heures de repos ? Qui ?... Qui sont ces enfants au sourire éclatant, aux yeux de braise et de soleil, à la peau mate et douce, aux cheveux de jais, bouclés, brillants ? Qui sont les parents de cette « multitude » qui n'arrête pas de croître, d'année en année ? Francine, étonnamment, découvre une nouvelle vie, qu'elle n'attendait pas du tout et qui pourtant va la rendre heureuse ; le bonheur est quelquefois très loin de l'image que l'on s'en était construite...mais il faut savoir le reconnaître quand il s'offre, savoir ouvrir son cœur, savoir répondre à un sourire par un sourire... loin, très loin des clichés habituels et négatifs que notre société frileuse développe à tour de bras. Vous voyez ?Moi, je viens de loin... Je n’ai jamais vu d’Arabes de près !Alors, prudemment, presque sur la pointe des pieds, je mets le nez dehors. Je regarde avec force dans la rue. Il y a des enfants partout, de tous les âges. Il y a du soleil dans leurs yeux.
