Many years after king Agamemnon's murder at the hands of his wife Clytamnestra and her lover Aigisthos, his son Orestes returns home with Pylades to mourn at his grave. He has been living in exile and has come back to Argos in secret; his mission is to avenge Agamemnon's death.Orestes arrives at the grave of his father, accompanied by his cousin Pylades, the son of the king of Phocis, where he has grown up in exile; he places two locks of his hair on the tomb. Orestes and Pylades hide as Electra, Orestes' sister, arrives at the grave accompanied by a chorus of elderly slave women (the libation bearers of the title) to pour libations on Agamemnon's grave; they have been sent by Clytemnestra in an effort to ward off harm. Just as the ritual ends, Electra spots a lock of hair on the tomb which she recognizes as similar to her own; subsequently she sees two sets of footprints, one of which has proportions similar to hers. At this point Orestes and Pylades emerge from their hiding place and Orestes gradually convinces her of his identity.

Al igual que hiciera en Electra, Eurípides da a sus personajes un tratamiento realista y humano que les aleja de sus orígenes arquetípicos, lo cual debió de asombrar al público ateniense. En Ifigenia en Áulide aparece Agamenón en el trance de tener que sacrificar a su hija Ifigenia en la población del título para propiciar el éxito de la expedición griega a Troya. Trata de salvarla mediante argucias, a las que se opone su hermano Menelao. Marcada por la violencia, esta tragedia ha sugerido a muchos espectadores una denuncia contra la locura de la guerra, en la que una joven inocente debe morir por una profecía en la que pocos creen. Bacantes trata la introducción en Grecia del culto a Dionisio, una religión muy distinta de la tradicional olímpica. Dioniso llega a Tebas y enloquece a las mujeres, que celebran sus ritos en el monte Citerón. Desgracias terribles caen sobre los que se oponen a su divinidad. Bacantes, con su acción feroz y los éxtasis de sus odas corales, es el mejor reflejo del espíritu dionisíaco en toda la literatura, y la única tragedia ática conocida que tiene a un dios como protagonista.
