Joshuas Vater Ariel eröffnete in Seraing, einer Industriestadt an der Maas, eine Metzgerei. Joshua und sein Bruder Menahim waren zwei von etwa 30.000 jüdischen Schattenkindern, die in Belgien den Zweiten Weltkrieg und die Schoah überlebten. Unter dem Namen Pierre Thonnar lebte Joshua von August 1942 bis zum September 1944 in Stoumont in den belgischen Ardennen. In dem 350-Seelen-Dorf nahm der Pfarrer Marcel Stenne fünfzehn bis zwanzig Jungen in der Ferienkolonie »Au grand Air« auf. Bei den Vinzentinerinnen, die in Stoumont ein Erholungsheim unterhielten, überlebten zwanzig bis dreißig jüdische Mädchen. Im Dezember 1944, als der Krieg schon vorüber schien, holte er Joshua noch einmal ein, denn in dem kleinen Dorf wurde eine entscheidende Schlacht der Ardennenoffensive geschlagen. Joshua und sein Hase, die wie durch ein Wunder Krieg und Vernichtung entronnen waren, gerieten noch einmal zwischen die Fronten.

In this American story there is, beside its intrinsic value as work of art, a certain homely practicality and quaintness that lends it a special charm. Their very diction is as amusing to us as its plot, and things which we should write as humorous caricature is set down in the most matter-of-fact sobriety. The characters of this little book are so lifelike, the story is so pleasant, the morality so sound, and the whole tone and treatment so brisk and healthful, that no one can read it without both pleasure and amusement, while its influence over the young would be, we should say, decidedly powerful as well as useful.

In this acute crisis King George VI appointed a man whose reputation and earlier political success were questioned by many influential figures. Yet public opinion and some wiser men and women of substance, such as Lord Halifax, the alternative choice as Prime Minister at the time, determined the outcome. Their choice was thoroughly vindicated by the events that followed. His courage, boldness, rhetoric and inspiration united the country in its solitary stand against the might of the Luftwaffe and the potential landing of the dreaded Wehrmacht on British soil.
