«Baluchistán», «Beluchistán», «el Beluchistán», elijan ustedes, no había sido más que un eco lejano del Gran Juego entre rusos y británicos, poco más que una ilusión óptica en uno de esos mapas militares del siglo xix pegados en tela. Es un topónimo rotundo, sonoro y, sobre todo, evocador, aunque el procesador de textos insiste en subrayarlo siempre en rojo. <br> <br> Un proverbio pastún dice que Dios no encontró páramo más inhóspito ni periferia más remota para arrojar los escombros de la creación. En cuanto a la ciencia, geólogos norteamericanos lo catalogaron como «lo más parecido a Marte sobre la Tierra»; de hecho, uno busca «Baluchistán» en Ebay y casi todo son piedras: axinitas, brucitas, tremolitas, fluoritas… Pero también es oro, uranio, petróleo y gas, mucho gas, lo que se esconde bajo las sandalias de este pueblo (más de quince millones de personas) atrapado justo donde chocan las fronteras de Irán, Pakistán y Afganistán. <br> <br> Hay que hacer un pequeño esfuerzo para entender todo esto: uno ha de dirigir su mente hacia Oriente y pensar en aquello como un naufragio del que nadie informó. Sobrevivieron camelleros y taxistas, estudiantes, profesoras y peluqueros, escritoras, guerrilleros, refugiados, nómadas e incluso aristócratas. Sus historias coinciden en que empiezan, o acaban, en uno de los lugares más desconocidos del planeta. <br> <br> <br> SOBRE EL AUTOR <br> <br> A <b>Karlos Zurutuza</b> (Donostia, 1971) le habría gustado embarcarse en Nantucket, pero sus pies le llevaban siempre hacia el este, generalmente por los lodazales y polvazales más periféricos.
