Doch Tivaros Opa wird überraschend mit einem Oberschenkelhalsbruch ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert. Bei einem Besuch bei seinem Großvater begegnet Tivaro dem wütenden Professor Rupert Raff, einem Erzrivalen von Tivaros Opa Reinhard. Der Großvater weiht Tivaro auf dem Krankenbett in ein altes Geheimnis ein: es geht um einen millionenschweren Nazi-Goldschatz, der irgendwo im Taunus versteckt sein soll. Er gibt Tivaro den Auftrag, vier Silberschlüssel und ein altes Schachspiel aus seiner Wohnung zu holen. Als Tivaro am darauf folgenden Tag mit seiner Mutter Elise in die Wohnung von Opa Reinhard kommt, werden sie Zeugen eines Einbruchs. Der Eindringling flüchtet und verschwindet mit einem Motorrad. Kurz darauf stirbt der Großvater. Auf der Beerdigung erscheint auch Rupert Raff und zeigt großes Interesse an Opa Reinhards Schachspiel. Tivaro entdeckt daraufhin die Hälfte einer siebzig Jahre alten Schatzkarte in der Königsfigur des Schachspiels. Er berichtet den anderen Detektiven Otto, Nico und Jojo von den Ereignissen und sie beschließen, den Nazi-Goldschatz zu suchen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass auch Rupert Raff einen Teil der Schatzkarte besitzt. Bei einem Einbruch in der Villa des Professors können die Detektive die andere Schatzkartenhälfte fotografieren. Außerdem erfahren sie, dass Atze Holowitz, ein Motorradfahrer und Neffe des Professors mit Grabungsarbeiten im Taunus beschäftigt ist. Schnell finden die Detektive heraus, wo die Grabungen stattfinden. Auf einer Ebay-Auktion ersteigern sich die Jungen von o-vier verschiedene Ausrüstungsgegenstände – zum Ärger von Holger, einem Freund von Ottos Mutter Brigitte, der die Freunde der Detektivgang o-vier schon länger um ihren Erfolg beneidet. Als die Ausrüstung eintrifft, verabreden sich die jungen Detektive im Taunus und entdecken bald daraufhin einen Bautrupp, der mit Sprengungen in einem alten Stollensystem beschäftigt ist. Vom Forstamt herbeigerufene Polizeikräfte nehmen an der Grabungsstelle alle Arbeiter wegen des Verdachts auf illegale Schwarzarbeit vorläufig fest. Atze Holowitz, der Chef des Grabungs-Teams, flüchtet ungesehen durch einen der Stolleneingänge. Die Detektive können die Beamten einer zurückgelassenen Polizeistreife dazu überreden, die Verfolgung aufzunehmen. Dabei kommt es zu einem Schusswechsel zwischen Holowitz und einem der Polizisten. Als die Jungen von o-vier wenig später in ein großes unterirdisches Gewölbe vordringen, laufen sie Atze Holowitz direkt in die Arme. Dieser entpuppt sich als schießwütiger Neo-Nazi und Waffen-Narr, der nun die jungen Detektive dazu zwingen will, die in Felsen eingelassenen Schatzkammern zu sprengen.
