In North-eastern Afghanistan, several groups and political powers fight for control: The allied troops led by the US spare no effort to leave the country at the Hindukush soon and hand over political responsibility to the local people. But whom can they trust? The country is threatened by power struggles between different ethnic groups, tribes, Islamists and foreign secret services. The effort required by the allied forces to avoid the situation spiralling out of control is immense. A planned Loya Jirga, a gathering of influential tribal elders where important political and ethnical questions are discussed could resolve the balance of power. However, the individual leaders are at odds with one another and the gathering is likely to fail before it even begins. At the same time, an Afghan visits the renowned archaeographist Éduard Berniér in Switzerland, with a stone. He asks the scientist for his expert opinion on it. Nawid, a Pashtun boy, found the stone in dramatic circumstances. First, Berniér is tempted to pass on this request to his colourful and heinous rival Penrose. But then, he can be convinced to examine the trove himself. As he is on his way to Delhi and Kabul, he can meet the elder of the Pashtun Hamidzai tribe, who has asked for his opinion. A wild chase criss-crossing North-eastern Afghanistan to find the treasure shrouded in mystery begins. This treasure, mentioned already in Afghan history, holds insights into the fate of Afghan society and thus offers conclusions for the Loya Jirga. However, several parties pursue their interest in the stone, amongst them Penrose, the famous American archaeologist, and the Pakistani secret service. His main concern is the value of the precious stone, theirs the political status quo of their neighbouring country. Berniér and his friends including Nawid, the last successor of the Hamidzai elder, are on a mission where friendship and trust are vital for survival. cyrill-delvin.net

Is it really possible to live out the Great Commandment? When an expert in the law asked Jesus what the greatest commandment is, Jesus gave a clear and simple answer:"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."But what does the Great Commandment look like on the ground, in our day-to-day lives? And can we even come close to living it out?Jesus, Greg Ogden believes, has a simple answer to that too. He writes, "Jesus didn't follow [the Great Commandment] up by saying, 'I know I'm asking a lot, but do the best you can. I know you'll never fully approximate this high and lofty goal, but it's still worth striving for.' . . . Jesus thinks this is possible." And with Jesus, Ogden has found, it is possible--and essential. In this practical, in-depth handbook, Ogden draws from his years of pastoral experience training and discipling others to help us truly be changed by Christ into people who love God and love others with all that we are. Following the format of his bestselling Discipleship Essentials, each chapter includes: - a core truth - a memory verse - an inductive Bible study - a reading on one aspect of the Great Commandment Thoughtful questions will also help you examine your heart and life and move you to open yourself to God's transforming work.Above all, Ogden helps you see that the Great Commandment is actually a great invitation to join God in bringing his kingdom to earth. And as you learn to do so, you'll find that the greatest commandment leads to the greatest life possible.

Over the course of recent decades, scholars and practitioners have been working to integrate contemporary psychology-related fields and Christianity. This project continues to move forward, evidenced in associations, publications, degree programs, and conferences around the world. While much progress has been made, there are still foundational issues to be worked out and aspects of integration the community is just now venturing into. In this expert overview, psychologists William L. Hathaway and Mark A. Yarhouse take stock of the integration project to date, provide an introduction for those who wish to come on board, highlight work yet to be done, and offer a framework to strategically organize next steps. The authors' attention encompasses five domains: - worldview integration - theoretical integration - applied integration - role integration - personal integration Their comprehensive approach yields insights relevant for non-clinical areas of psychological science as well as for counseling, social work, and other related mental health fields. Done properly, integration enriches our understanding of both Christianity and psychology. Through biblical and theological grounding and numerous examples, Hathaway and Yarhouse demonstrate how synthesis can continue to serve the field and make a difference in caring for individual lives. Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) Books explore how Christianity relates to mental health and behavioral sciences including psychology, counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to equip Christian clinicians to support the well-being of their clients.

Foreword Reviews' INDIEFAB Honorable Mention Few topics are more contested today than gender identity. In the fog of the culture war, complex issues like gender dysphoria are reduced to slogans and sound bites. And while the war rages over language, institutions and political allegiances, transgender individuals are the ones who end up being the casualties. Mark Yarhouse, an expert in sexual identity and therapy, challenges the church to rise above the political hostilities and listen to people's stories. In Understanding Gender Dysphoria, Yarhouse offers a Christian perspective on transgender issues that eschews simplistic answers and appreciates the psychological and theological complexity. The result is a book that engages the latest research while remaining pastorally sensitive to the experiences of each person. In the midst of a tense political climate, Yarhouse calls Christians to come alongside those on the margins and stand with them as they resolve their questions and concerns about gender identity. Understanding Gender Dysphoria is the book we need to navigate these stormy cultural waters. Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) Books explore how Christianity relates to mental health and behavioral sciences including psychology, counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to equip Christian clinicians to support the well-being of their clients.

Parish Clergy Award It's an exciting time to be reading the Bible. As we increasingly encounter readers with perspectives, experiences, and cultures different from our own, we can incorporate new ideas and approaches to interpreting Scripture. When diverse interpretations from various social locations are gathered together, we gain new vistas and a fuller image of the text. In Reading the Bible Around the World, a crosscultural team of scholars describes and workshops global readings in biblical interpretation, focusing on passages in both the Old and New Testaments. By presenting a range of readings from different regions and people groups, with particular attention to marginalized groups, the authors demonstrate the importance of contextually sensitive approaches. They help us build up key values for reading Scripture in the twenty-first century: self-awareness, other-awareness, and true dialogue. Who we are shapes how we read. Guided by these expert teachers, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the influence of their own social location and how to keep growing in biblical wisdom by reading alongside the global Christian community.
