  2. The Woodlanders

This is the annotated edition including a rare biographical essay on the life and works of the author. In "The Woodlanders" we have the intimate sense of the mystery and the passion of nature; again we have the wonderful power of describing rural characters; again we have the closely knit and powerful action; we even have glimpses of the old humor. Still there is an indefinable something that separates the author of "The Woodlanders" from the author of "Far from the Madding Crowd." Twelve years have made Mr. Hardy a more practised writer, they have given him a wider experience, but they have not made him any more in love with life. On the contrary, as has been indicated, they have frequently made him see little in life except a purposeless struggle in the coils of an implacable fate. And so Giles Winterbourne in "The Woodlanders" fails in the pursuit of his love, which is his life, when Farmer Oak, in "Far from the Madding Crowd" succeeds. Honesty, loyalty, and love meet death for their reward; while a barely decent repentance on the part of a rather repulsive personage is rewarded by the love of a heroine who though scarcely noble is worthy of a better fate. It, therefore, matters little when we view "The Woodlanders" as a whole, whether the descriptions of the forests to be found in its pages are unexcelled in truth and beauty even by Mr. Hardy himself, or whether the scene which describes Marty South dressing the grave of Winterbourne is the finest in the whole range of our author's novels; for the total impression produced by the book is painful because the fate that rules its characters is to Mr. Hardy, as well as to his readers, the relentless fate of alien times and peoples. And yet how powerful and original the book is, and who else among modern Englishmen could have written it!

  4. The Origin, History & Purport of Freemasonry

The intention of this work is to endeavor to unravel the intricate web in which the mystery (of freemasonry) is involved, by tracing the order back to its source, and, by showing its intimate connection and similitude to institutions more ancient, put it beyond a doubt, that it sprang from and is a continuation of the rites and ceremonies observed in those establishments. That the writer, as a freemason, is extremely liberal, may be judged from his own reprobation of the oaths imposed upon members. He considers a total abandonment of the oaths, at the present day, requisite. He says that the mysteries, from which the institution was derived, created, and that the custom of the times when it was established, sanctioned the most horrible oaths. The argument used, that these oaths are no longer necessary, is, we think, effectual against the existence of Masonry itself.

  9. A House-Boat on the Styx

A House-Boat on the Styx is a fantasy novel written by John Kendrick Bangs. The original full title was A House-Boat on the Styx: Being Some Account of the Divers Doings of the Associated Shades. The novel was first published by Harper Brothers in 1896 with illustrations by Peter Newell (24 plates). The premise of the book is that everyone who has ever died (up to the time in which the book is set, which seems to be about the time of its publication) has gone to Styx, the river that circles the underworld. The book begins with Charon, ferryman of the Styx being startled—and annoyed—by the arrival of a houseboat on the Styx. At first afraid that the boat will put him out of business, he later finds out that he is actually to be appointed the boat's janitor. What follows are eleven more stories (for a total of twelve) which are set on the house boat. There is no central theme, and the purpose of the book appears to be as a literary thought experiment to see what would happen if various famous dead people were put in the same room with each other. Each chapter is a short story featuring various souls from history and mythology. In the twelfth chapter the house boat disappears, leading into the sequel, Pursuit of the House-Boat.

  12. The Glimpses of the Moon

It rose for them—their honey-moon—over the waters of a lake so famed as the scene of romantic raptures that they were rather proud of not having been afraid to choose it as the setting of their own. “It required a total lack of humour, or as great a gift for it as ours, to risk the experiment,” Susy Lansing opined, as they hung over the inevitable marble balustrade and watched their tutelary orb roll its magic carpet across the waters to their feet. “Yes—or the loan of Strefford’s villa,” her husband emended, glancing upward through the branches at a long low patch of paleness to which the moonlight was beginning to give the form of a white house-front. “Oh, come—when we’d five to choose from. At least if you count the Chicago flat.” “So we had—you wonder!” He laid his hand on hers, and his touch renewed the sense of marvelling exultation which the deliberate survey of their adventure always roused in her. . . . It was characteristic that she merely added, in her steady laughing tone: “Or, not counting the flat—for I hate to brag—just consider the others: Violet Melrose’s place at Versailles ...

  13. Sister Carrie

<p>In Sister Carrie, Dreiser portrayed a changing society, writing about a young woman who flees rural life for the city (Chicago) and struggles with poverty, complex relationships with men, and prostitution. It sold poorly and was considered controversial because of moral objections to his featuring a country girl who pursues her dreams of fame and fortune through relationships with men. </p> <br> <p>The book has since acquired a considerable reputation. It has been called the "greatest of all American urban novels." It was adapted as a 1952 film by the same name, directed by William Wyler and starring Laurence Olivier and Jennifer Jones.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>"..When Caroline Meeber boarded the afternoon train for Chicago, her total outfit consisted of a small trunk, a cheap imita-tion alligator-skin satchel, a small lunch in a paper box, and a yellow leather snap purse, containing her ticket, a scrap of paper with her sister's address in Van Buren Street, and four dollars in money. It was in August, 1889. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>She was eighteen years of age, bright, timid, and full of the illusions of ignorance and youth. Whatever touch of regret at parting characterised her thoughts, it was certainly not for advantages now being given up. A gush of tears at her mother's farewell kiss, a touch in her throat when the cars clacked by the flour mill where her father worked by the day, a pathetic sigh as the familiar green environs of the village passed in review, and the threads which bound her so lightly to girlhood and home were irretrievably broken.."</p>

  14. Germany – The Handbook for Foreign Companies and Founders

Germany is an especially attractive business location for many professionals; it is the biggest market within the European Union (EU) and in addition, worldwide the 4th largest industrial nation following the USA, Japan and China with a gross domestic product (GDP) of 2.7 billion Euros (status: 2013). The German economy is primarily focused on the provision of services as well as the automotive, chemical and electro-technology industries, whose products are internationally appraised with the quality seal "Made in Germany". Moreover, Germany is world renowned for its leading innovations and technology. This is especially due to the German talent for good organisation and diligent work ethic. The export trade plays an integral part within the German economy. Every fifth job position depends on foreign trade directly or indirectly. In 2009, Germany was the second biggest goods exporter worldwide, with an export volume of 1.121 million US-dollars, just after it was given the title of global export champion six times between 2003 and 2008. In total, Germany&apos;s share of the global market is about nine percent. Thanks to its dedication to export, hardly any other country is as tied in with the global economy and will continue its interest in open markets into the future. There are further important advantages, aside from these significant factors, that speak for Germany as a business location. For instance, it has a geographically central location within Central Europe, an outstanding transport network and many skilled and qualified workers. Worldwide Germans are known for their on-time delivery performance, discipline and quality. Furthermore, in addition to a high quality of life, a high legal and political safety is also offered.

  15. Schuman report on Europe

<b>A complete review of the European Union.</b> <br> <br>Europeans are facing major challenges. From the risk of populist contagion and Brexit at internal level, to migratory issues and the questioning of their values, as well as their interests, from the external points of view, Europeans must fi nd their place in a world in which only Union will bring strength. These challenges imply the Europeans’ ability to stand as one against the turmoil they face. In a situation like this how should their expectations be met, notably in terms of security as well as economic and social protection ? In his speech at the Sorbonne French President Emmanuel Macron, put forward a new European policy. He wants to turn European integration into a tool for sovereignty, both from the economic and geopolitical points of view, with the aim of giving Europeans total freedom and a true feeling of pride. Undeniably, France is back in Europe. European integration has freed the States and people of Europe of their permanent power struggles ; it now has to protect them from external constraints. The question is now to know how this should be achieved. This is the question at the heart of the 9th Schuman Report. <br> <br> <b>Delve into this reference work regarding European Affairs!</b> <br> <br>EXTRACT <br> <br>If we want to protect our European values, our freedom, peace and prosperity, we must be more ambitious.
