  4. The Hill

Angela France's The Hill is a remarkable sequence of poems that leads us up the winding footpaths of Leckhampton Hill near Cheltenham. Under our feet are fossils and flora, bones and the relics of quarrying. France is masterful in capturing the sense of place and weaving the entrancing voices of the hill, its walkers and inhabitants, into the fabric of these formally adventurous poems that range from prose to 'anglish', richly worded and delighting in their shapes and sounds. Here, we encounter ghosts, foxes and ancient kings. We meet the protestors who, years before the Kinder Scout Trespassers, were standing up for their rambling rights and took the law into their own hands in 1902 when a landowner tried to enclose the hill they had walked for generations. And though history is never far from the surface, The Hill raises questions that are just as important today; who has the right to roam, whose land is it,

  6. The Maracot Deep

The Maracot Deep is an adventurous science-fiction novella in which Arthur Conan Doyle sends readers on an undersea journey to the lost city of Atlantis. Professor Maracot, an intrepid explorer reminiscent of Professor Challenger, leads a small expedition – including a young engineer and a hardy diver – to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean in a specialized diving bell. There, in the lightless abyss, they make an astonishing discovery: an air-filled sub-marine cavern housing survivors of ancient Atlantis, a civilization presumed destroyed millennia ago. Doyle vividly imagines the Atlanteans: they possess advanced technology (crystal energy devices) and live under the rule of an immortal high priest who has sinister psychic powers. As Maracot and his companions acclimate to this hidden society, they face wonders and perils. Giant deep-sea creatures roam outside the city's dome; inside, the visitors get caught in the power struggle with a malevolent sea-demon the Atlanteans worship. The climax is high fantasy – Maracot matches wits with this demon (an evil intelligence) in a battle of science vs. dark magic. Ultimately, with the demon banished and Atlantis beginning to crumble, the heroes escape dramatically back to the surface. The Maracot Deep combines Doyle's scientific curiosity with swashbuckling fantasy, offering a Jules Verne-esque tale with Doyle's twist of mystical conflict. As one contemporary reviewer noted, it's "an ingenious piece of literature" for fans of Atlantis lore and Verne-style exploits.

  7. The Unwilling Adventurer

THE wayfarer on life's highway who has reached that stage of this earthly pilgrimage which is graciously miscalled middle age -a period when the full-blooded green of summer begins to show certain sere and yellow adumbrations of approaching autumn; when the silvery frost of age has begun to gather on the temples and Time has written, in many a lined inscription, the epitaph of passions dead and gone, of sorrows buried and forgotten; if he should pause to look back and retrace in memory the stages of his journey, will surely let his eye roam fondly over the fairer scenes - the shady dells, the flower sprinkled meadows, the quiet streams by which he has rested in joy and peace - rather than the dismal wilderness through which he has struggled, despairing and dismayed...

  8. Rightfully Shared

Sean has been my best friend as long as I can remember—benefits included. Even the apocalypse does not change that. We used to roam night clubs; now we roam the wastelands, scavenging. I'd never leave Sean behind, but his leg is badly injured and he can barely keep up. Every day, life is getting more and more dangerous. And with less than one-third of the female population left, women are a rare commodity. We need help. If it was only me, I'd have the apocalypse version of a sugar daddy in no time—but I need someone willing to protect both me and Sean. And I will do whatever it takes to find him…   Dark sci-fi novella with wildly over-the-top action and an HEA. Contains a grunting alien with horns, a possessive human man, and a tiny dash of the apocalypse.
