  5. Our Cool Run to Sturgis 2017

A special kind of travel journal... A German rides to the largest motorcycle party in the world with a 92ci (1500cc) Victory bike and some good American friends from St. Paul (Minnesota) to "STURGIS" (South Dakota). He lets the reader/viewer get a taste of his impressions of the landscapes, people, experiences, and the American way of living. It is a book of a road trip with many expressive images that speak for themselves ... Anyone who has not been there by now at least has the opportunity to get a taste of the great freedom, the "Big Event" - the "Sturgis Bike Week" - and also the diverse and breathtaking scenes of nature from the author´s perspective, such as the prairie, the Badlands, and the Black Hills. He or she should get a little taste of all this, and also a little appetite, ... Yes, he or she should long for a bit MORE ... Because at the right time, nothing is cooler than the inner attitude to life according to the Native American motto: Let it go with the flow ...! The cover photo shows the author (left) and his American buddy John (right) on the way to Sturgis on the outskirts of "White River", which they have taken shortly after a refueling stop. PS: In the book's appendix, many "links" have been added for people who also feel like experiencing the wild beauty of this unspoiled South Dakota country. In addition, a highly recommended American travel guide around the Bike Week in Sturgis is presented.

  9. The Liberation Line

'Highly original' Simon Heffer, Telegraph 'Masterful... A gripping tale' Giles Milton They certainly were not soldiers, yet they suddenly found themselves in uniform, in a foreign land. But, as locomotive drivers, track-workers, conductors, porters, signalmen and engine cleaners, they knew how to run trains. And their job was to bring them back to life. The Liberation Line tells the thrilling story of the British and American railway engineers who, in the months after D-Day, worked around the clock and in great danger to rebuild the ravaged railways of Europe and keep the Allied forces fuelled as they pushed on into Germany. As territory was taken, these soldier-railroaders were close behind, rebuilding the lines, putting up telegraph wires, replacing bridges and laying track, all the while dodging bullets, shells and booby traps. Tales of extraordinary feats and heroism abound, including how 10,000 men rebuilt a 135-mile-long railway in just three days; the reconstruction of the bridge over the Seine in two weeks while under bombardment; and the use of cigarette lighters as improvised signalling systems. Despite being critical to Allied victory, the role of the railwaymen has been largely forgotten or ignored. In a vivid and gripping narrative, Christian Wolmar brings to life this colourful cast of generals and engineers, without whose extraordinary bravery the liberation of France and invasion of Germany might well have foundered - and the course of history changed.

  14. From the Iowa Caucuses to the White House

Donald Trump won a significant victory in Iowa in 2016. Although Iowa was carried by Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, Trump won the popular vote in 93 of its 99 counties, 32 of which were carried by Obama in 2012. What explains this significant victory, in which a third of Iowa’s counties were flipped? Through a mixed-methods approach, this volume demonstrates that Trump’s electoral victory was shaped by three key factors: firstly, the electorate’s desire for “change” in Washington, D.C.; secondly, Trump’s successful appeals to both the Republican base and white, working-class voters who had previously supported Barack Obama; and thirdly, Iowa’s conservative ideological tendency regarding immigration and race. While contributing to emerging literature on the 2016 presidential elections, this book also serves to aid educators with a published resource on Iowa's&#xa0;electoral politics. <p></p>

  18. The Barbarian Invasions (Serapis Classics)

What caused the fall of the Roman Empire? The first reply that occurs to us is this: That the Romans were corrupt and enfeebled by corruption; the Barbarians, while rougher, were also stronger and less corrupt. When the latter had once crossed the Rhine and the Danube, their ultimate victory was assured; the Empire was bound to fall, new social conditions were bound to arise. But what had corrupted and weakened a people that had been for so many centuries a model of discipline, virtue, and strength - a people that had conquered the world? Its corruption was a consequence, not a cause, and was the first symptom of the decline that had already begun. The Empire that Livy had seen bending beneath the burden of its own greatness could not last for ever...

  21. The Adventures of Akbar

<p>THIS BOOK is written for all little lads and lasses, but especially for the former, since it is the true—quite true—story of a little lad who lived to be, perhaps, the greatest king this world has ever seen.&nbsp;<br>It is a strange, wild tale this of the adventures of Prince Akbar among the snowy mountains between Kandahar and Kabul, and though the names may be a bit of a puzzle at first, as they will have to be learned by and bye in geography and history lessons, it might be as well to get familiar with them in a story-book; though, indeed, as everybody in it except Roy the Rajput, Meroo the cook boy; Tumbu, the dog; and Down, the cat (and these four may have been true, you know, though they have not been remembered) really lived, I don't know whether this book oughtn't to be considered real history, and therefore&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>A LESSON BOOK:&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>"Anyhow, I hope you won't find it dull."&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>STORIES:&nbsp;<br>FAREWELL &nbsp;<br>THE FIRST VICTORY &nbsp;<br>THE ROYAL UMBRELLA &nbsp;<br>TUMBU-DOWN &nbsp;<br>ON THE ROAD &nbsp;<br>AT COURT &nbsp;<br>WINTER&nbsp;<br>DOWN'S STRATAGEM&nbsp;<br>SPRING &nbsp;<br>THE NIGHT OF RECORD &nbsp;<br>A WINTER MARCH&nbsp;<br>SNOW AND ICE &nbsp;<br>OVER THE PASS &nbsp;<br>IN THE VALLEY&nbsp;<br>DEAREST-LADY&nbsp;<br>CRUEL BROTHER KUMRAN&nbsp;<br>IMPRISONMENT&nbsp;<br>THE GARDEN OF GAMES&nbsp;<br>BETWIXT CUP AND LIP&nbsp;<br>ESCAPED&nbsp;<br>DAWN</p>

  27. Talisman

Serving as a sequel to 2016's Ice Road, Talisman is the second addition in the "Oulunsalo Fiction" trilogy. Ice Road's Samuli and Tapani are back for another nightless summer in the north. They've been upgraded from deliverymen to bosses through old bossman, and new grandpa Rene, whose heir gave birth to that of Samuli during a year already grand in terms of life-development. Joining the story is the 17-year-old Viktor, whose endless walks around the neighborhood seem to make him but a regular piece of its scenery... and whose mask is taken off quick every time he steps foot at home. Stakes are at an expected but brand new height, as the upgraded bossmen bask in the victory of running the local drug-trade. As all this happens, the arms of shadow-clocks on the walls begin making unfamiliar tics, last year's disappearees are still nowhere to be found, people lose sight of themselves biting more than they can chew, and before eyes have the chance to be batted, everything's on a steady course downward.
