This book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the “International Conference on Operations Research (OR 2011)” which took place at the University of Zurich from August 30 to September 2, 2011. The conference was jointly organized by the German speaking OR societies from Austria (ÖGOR), Germany (GOR) and Switzerland (SVOR) under the patronage of SVOR. More than 840 scientists and students from over 50 countries attended OR 2011 and presented 620 papers in 16 parallel topical streams, as well as special award sessions. The conference was designed according to the understanding of Operations Research as an interdisciplinary science focusing on modeling complex socio-technical systems to gain insight into behavior under interventions by decision makers. Dealing with “organized complexity” lies in the core of OR and designing useful support systems to master the challenge of system management in complex environment is the ultimate goal of our professional societies. To this end, algorithmic techniques and system modeling are two fundamental competences which are also well-balanced in these proceedings.

Riema Abdunnur gives insight into publications focusing on performing violinists, particularly on those suffering from CMD, subsequently providing a better understanding to the unique work conditions of violinists, and enhancing diagnosis and therapeutic results by practitioner dentists. Moreover, the analysis of the included papers aims to reveal what exactly was studied in violinists regarding to CMD, and how far manual medicine was included there. The conclusion of the author is, playing violin could be classified as a potential factor associated with CMD in violinists. More researches that take the interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and manual medicine into special account are recommended.

About the Author

Riema Abdunnur did her research studies at Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria.

»As the impressive stories in this book illustrate, the experiences of the RED NOSES clowndoctors are as diverse as life itself: from cheerful and happy to moving and touching! The stories are all based on true situations. Look forward to stories full of little miracles.« Clowndoctors from Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and many other countries describe moving encounters with patients, young and old: Évi, who dances her heart out with the clowns even though she can hardly stand on her own two feet; Álmos, an autistic boy who suddenly starts to speak when the clowns are there; Annie, who turns the tables and makes the clowndoctors laugh; or Melisa, a patient with cancer for whom the doctors had no more hope, but who nonetheless overcomes the crisis after the clowndoctor's visit. This book perfectly illustrates the power of laughter and humour, and the ability of the artists to create moments of happiness and joy in every situation, even when things seem lost.

In this fast-paced narrative, historian Ralph P. Güntzel explains how a settlement that started as a small royal court in the middle of the wilderness became the capital of a kingdom and eventually morphed into the thriving metropolis of North Hesse. Narrated in a user-friendly style, this book places local events into the larger context of German and European history. It offers a fresh perspective on the major developments in the history of the city and brings to life numerous intriguing characters. Loaded with wry commentary, it takes supposedly great men from their pedestal and gives credit to hitherto unsung heroes who have helped shape Kassel's fortunes in past and present. A native of Kassel, Ralph P. Güntzel studied in Göttingen, Berlin, and Montréal and earned his Ph.D. in history from McGill University (Montréal). He has held teaching positions in Montréal, Franklin (Indiana), and Salzburg, and currently is the chair of the Department of History at Franklin College. His most recent monograph is entitled "Understanding 'Old Europe': An Introduction to the Culture, Politics, and History of France, Germany, and Austria" and was published by Tectum in 2010. Praise for "Understanding 'Old Europe'": "Güntzel's style is elegant and easily understandable for students and teachers of French or German Studies, history, political science, or European civilization. Americans planning a trip abroad be it as informed tourists or for professional reasons; and Austrians, French, and Germans interested in their own culture and the historical roots of many of the customs and policies in place today would likewise profit from Güntzel's narrative.
