"She hated me. She hates me still ... yes...." He waited. The doctor was embarrassed and came back to the object of the visit. "I should be ever so much more comfortable in my mind if you saw a specialist, Mr.—er—Jackson. You see how difficult it is for me to give an opinion? I may be wrong. I know nothing of your history, your medical history I mean. There are so many men in town who could give you a better and more valuable opinion than I. A country practitioner like myself is rather in a backwater. One has the usual cases that come to one in a small country town, maternity cases, commonplace ailments ... it is difficult to keep abreast of the extraordinary developments in medical science...." "Do you know anything about Machonicies College?" asked the colonel unexpectedly. "Yes, of course." The doctor was surprised. "It is one of the best of the technical schools. Many of our best doctors and chemists take a preparatory course there. Why?" "I merely asked. As to your specialists ... I hardly think I shall bother them." Dr. Merriget watched the tall figure striding down the red-tiled path between the banked flowers, and was still standing on the doorstep when the whine of his visitor's machine had gone beyond the limits of his hearing. "H'm," said Dr. Merriget as he returned to his study. He sat awhile thinking. "Mr. Jackson?" he said aloud. "I wonder why the colonel calls himself 'Mr. Jackson'?"

  9. The Wife of Sir Isaac Harman

The Wife of Sir Isaac Harman - H. G. Wells - The Wife of Sir Isaac Harman is a 1913 novel by H. G. Wells. Lady Harman is in a loveless marriage with Sir Isaac. Despite great wealth and 4 children, the relationship is not happy, with Sir Isaac struggling to exhert his dominance over his wife as she strives for greater freedom in the era of the Suffragettes. Similar in vein to Wells' other book, Ann Veronica, it reflects the author's interest in feminism. Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 – 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is sometimes called the "father of science fiction. During his own lifetime, however, he was most prominent as a forward-looking, even prophetic social critic who devoted his literary talents to the development of a progressive vision on a global scale. A futurist, he wrote a number of utopian works and foresaw the advent of aircraft, tanks, space travel, nuclear weapons, satellite television and something resembling the World Wide Web. His science fiction imagined time travel, alien invasion, invisibility, and biological engineering. Brian Aldiss referred to Wells as the "Shakespeare of science fiction", while American writer Charles Fort referred to him as a "wild talent". Wells rendered his works convincing by instilling commonplace detail alongside a single extraordinary assumption per work – dubbed "Wells's law" – leading Joseph Conrad to hail him in 1898 as "O Realist of the Fantastic!". His most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine (1895), which was his first novel, The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds (1898) and the military science fiction The War in the Air (1907). Wells was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times.

  13. A Grim Almanac of Herefordshire

A Grim Almanac of Herefordshire is a day-by-day catalogue of 365 ghastly tales from around the county. Full of dreadful deeds, strange disappearances and a multitude of mysteries, this almanac explores the darker side of Herefordshire's past. Here are stories of tragedy, torment and the truly unfortunate with diverse tales of murderers, bodysnatchers, duelists, poachers, rioters and rebels. Joining them are accounts of tragic suicides, accidents and bizarre deaths, including William Prosser, who died in Clodock in 1893 as the result of a practical joke; the farmer bitten to death by his horse in 1887; and the young man from Colwall who allegedly sat on a spike. Also here is the case of a Yorkshire tramp, whose body was found in Weobley in 1894, and the murders and suicide of Charles Hankins and his two young children in Ledbury in 1896. Some killers were lucky to get away with charges of manslaughter, such as Thomas Carlyle, who shot a coachman near Leominster in 1871, and George Hatton, who rid himself of a nagging wife near Ross in 1893. All these, plus tales of fires, catastrophes, explosions and disasters, are here. Generously illustrated, this chronicle is an entertaining and readable record of Herefordshire's grim past. Read on... if you dare!

  17. Genghis Khan

If you want to discover the captivating life of Genghis Khan, then keep reading...   Around the year 1162, near the modern capital of Mongolia, a baby boy was born into a fractious and violent world. The birth of this child must have caused quite a stir among the members of the nomadic tribe that he had been born into; word soon traveled that the son of Yesügei, the Borjigin tribal leader, had been born clutching a blood clot in his tiny hand. Mongol folklore hailed this as a sign that the child would grow up to be a great leader of men, but perhaps history would interpret the baby's gruesome prize as a foreshadowing of the bloodshed that would accompany his life and his legacy. The story of Temüjin, and Genghis Khan as he would later be known, is a story about stories.    We have few original sources to tell us about his life, and the sources we do have are often contradictory or untrustworthy, so historians have had to piece together the story of Genghis Khan and fill in the blanks. What you will discover in this book is a combination of historical fact, expert conjecture, and myths and legends, filtered through the changing eyes of history and retold through many generations. There are many things we simply do not know about the enigmatic figure of Genghis Khan. There are many things that we think we know that may ultimately prove to be untrue. What is important is the story. Just as the young Temüjin must have sat around a campfire to be regaled by stories of his ancestral wolf heritage, we now sit around this virtual campfire to share the story of Genghis Khan.    In  Genghis Khan: A Captivating Guide to the Founder of the Mongol Empire and His Conquests Which Resulted in the Largest Contiguous Empire in History, you will discover topics such as: -  The Mongolian Steppe  -  Temüjin  -  Becoming Genghis Khan  -  Building the Mongol Empire  -  Life in Genghis Khan's Empire  -  Military Genius  -  Innovation  -  Death and Succession  -  The Mongol Empire After Genghis Khan  -  Pax Mongolica  -  The End of an Empire  -  And much, much more!    So if you want to learn more about Genghis Khan, scroll up and click the "add to cart" button!

  22. Mom rocks

This is a book about motherhood and all the crazy feelings that mothers have towards the children in their care, whether they are their own children, adoptive children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews. It's about families, but it's about mothers, too – these creatures who speak a weird, annoying language that can only be understood by women who become part of the club. Don't worry, though; this isn't a book of complaints. It's quite the opposite: these are funny, simple, true stories. If you've read "Dad is Cool," come and read about the more intense part of the journey. "Mom Rocks" has no filter; it features the most fun and moving juggling acts that a modern couple has to practice every day while raising their two daughters. What readers said about MOM ROCKS "I read it in one seating while at a doctor's appointment. The doctor's assistant even asked my husband whether he was married to 'that woman laughing at the book." I really saw myself in these stories." "I woke up at 5 a.m. today and couldn't go back to sleep. I made myself some coffee, picked up your book―which I had left on the kitchen counter―and went into the living room. I sat on the couch, opened the book, and started reading it. I laughed and I cried. I laughed more than I cried, though―but I did cry out of relief. I didn't feel so alone after reading your words. Thanks! "I loved this book. It fits me like a glove. It's realistic and makes great social commentary."

  26. Found Dead

Sir John Mortmain turned over the Sunday papers idly in search of some item of possible interest. It was one of those perfect mornings at the end of June, without the semblance of a cloud in the sky and the warm, languid air that conduces to sleepiness. Moreover, it was a Sunday morning, and Mortmain had nothing whatever to do. He sat in a long cane chair on the terrace in front of Mortmains, looking out across the slumbering sea and half wondering how he was going to get through the day.

  28. In the Palace of the King

Two young girls sat in a high though very narrow room of the old Moorish palace to which King Philip the Second had brought his court when he finally made Madrid his capital. It was in the month of November, in the afternoon, and the light was cold and grey, for the two tall windows looked due north, and a fine rain had been falling all the morning. The stones in the court were drying now, in patches, but the sky was like a smooth vault of cast lead, closing over the city that lay to the northward, dark, wet and still, as if its life had shrunk down under ground, away from the bitter air and the penetrating damp.
